Stop making these common living room design mistakes! Here’s how to fix them and create a more inviting space. Stop making these common living room design mistakes! Here’s how to fix them and create a more inviting space. 1. Avoid Pushing Furniture to the Walls Pushing all furniture to the walls might seem like it makes the room bigger, but it kills conversation and flow. Instead, try floating your furniture around a focal point to create a more inviting and balanced space. 2. Don’t Skip the Rug Rugs define spaces, especially in open concepts. Ensure your rug is big enough, with at least the front feet of your furniture on it. 3. Choose the Right Coffee Table Aim for a table about two-thirds the width of your sofa and one to two inches lower or the same height as your seat. For sectional sofas, round or square tables work best. If your table is too small, ottomans can fill the space and double as extra seating. 4. Provide Surfaces for Every Seat Every seat needs a surface. No one wants to put their drink on the floor. Add side tables so everyone has a spot to place their things. 5. Use Multiple Light Sources Don’t rely on overhead lighting alone. Use two to three different light sources to enhance the room’s coziness and utility. Smart bulbs on dimmers are a great touch.
