As someone passionate about supporting arts and cultural organizations, I've often pondered this question. In an age where technology dominates and budgets tighten, is investing in the arts a non-negotiable necessity or a luxurious indulgence?
I'd love to hear your thoughts! Do you see art as essential to our well-being and cultural identity, or do you think it’s something we can afford to cut back on?

As the one who asked, I'll start! I firmly believe that art is a necessity, especially in today's world. It's not just about beauty or entertainment—it's about connection, expression, and understanding. In these challenging times, art provides a vital outlet for both creators and audiences to explore emotions, share stories, and foster empathy. But I know not everyone sees it that way. What do you think?

Humans are mirrors.
We look to identify with others or feel into what may be profoundly different in them.
Meet Alan Bolden. In this clip (from our deep dive with him in a luminary panel) he speaks to a philosopher by the name of Hans Gil Gadamer who had a big influence on his life. The message Alan took from this guide was that when we meet others, we have the opportunity to encounter our own prejudices.
Coming up against the other person's mirror allows us to explore where we do and don't connect. By interacting with other humans we are able to reflect on how our world views vary.
A few questions for you-->
-How do you reflect on your own views? Do you connect only with people with similar views? -Do jump into diverse circles of perspectives and opinions?
-How do you shape your views when it comes to the people in your lives?
-Who informs your views, and why?
Living in questions is key to evolution.
If you're up for it, we'd love to hear your answers.
Don't forget to join Alan and our other 21 luminaries for Breaking the Rules of Business As Usual.

“If you don’t have the time to tell a story adequately don’t tell the story”
~ Natasha Kimani
* One thing has been clear (wither we agree or not) when we see most development, INGOs, humanitarian and nonprofit stories, it is evident not enough time was spent understanding the nuances of the situations, challenges or individual experiences. We see this in the visual choices, the sound bites, the type of stories and those chosen to speak about the projects etc.
* Stories are layered with beautiful complexities, nuances and different experiences of different people (not just the challenges). And it will take TIME to adequately uncover and learn them.
* For us to stay true and authentic to someone’s full story we have to approach it with the above in mind.
* To focus on one event or a challenge in a story is a a grave disservice to those in the story. We must provide TIME to LISTEN, listen without any implicit biases.
* Oftentimes organizations talk about not having the budget to allocate the time needed. But if they hire more creatives and storytellers in the communities and the countries where the projects are, they can cut cost from international flights and other costs, then they can pay local storytellers who will have the time for the people. They also have a better level of understanding of the nuances and complexities.
