What can be more "Chatpata" than an Indian street food affair? Taking inspiration from the vibrant "Chatpata" vibe of Indian street foods and the delightful blend of sweet and salty spices, Shiju Pappen from Gurugram founded The Chatpata Affair in 2020—just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. As a passionate food entrepreneur, Shiju is on a mission to elevate Indian street food by spotlighting regional delicacies while ensuring everything remains vegetarian and hygienic. His ambitious vision? To make Indian street foods the "king" of the culinary world, outshining burgers and pizzas! With a menu boasting nearly 200 items at each outlet, The Chatpata Affairs offers a mouthwatering array of choices from breakfast to dinner, including fusion dishes like Chaat, Bhalle Chaat, Papri Chaat, Badam Milk, Rolls, Sandwiches, and Shakes. Originally from a small town in Rajasthan, Shiju moved to Delhi in 1997, where he began his career at Pizza Hut. He shared, “I was earning only Rs. 5000-6000 per month for almost a year straight. It was tough to manage rent, electricity, and food.” After over two decades of experience, including serving as CEO of Southern Fried Chicken, Shiju’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch The Chatpata Affairs with an investment of just Rs. 5 lakh and a small, dedicated team. What began with a few menu items has blossomed into a thriving food chain with a presence across 50 locations nationwide, including prominent spots like Church Street in Bangalore, Nanganalur in Chennai, Ambience Mall in Gurgaon, and various universities in Hyderabad. Starting with a modest revenue of around Rs. 2 lakh per month from just two outlets, the venture embraced a franchise model after two years and has since experienced explosive growth. In FY-23, revenue skyrocketed to Rs. 6 crores and is projected to reach Rs. 8 crores in FY-24! The Gurugram-based venture plans to expand to 100 outlets by March 2025 and aims for 500 outlets by 2027, with exciting prospects for growth in the Middle East, Europe, and the US. While Shiju has grand expansion plans, he remains committed to ensuring food quality is always the top priority. As he wisely states, “I believe entrepreneurship is a journey of patience and perseverance. It’s not a lottery ticket to instant wealth or success.” ------------------------------------------ I interviewed Shiju Pappen for Startup Pedia.
