What can be more "Chatpata" than an Indian street food affair? Taking inspiration from the vibrant "Chatpata" vibe of Indian street foods and the delightful blend of sweet and salty spices, Shiju Pappen from Gurugram founded The Chatpata Affair in 2020—just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. As a passionate food entrepreneur, Shiju is on a mission to elevate Indian street food by spotlighting regional delicacies while ensuring everything remains vegetarian and hygienic. His ambitious vision? To make Indian street foods the "king" of the culinary world, outshining burgers and pizzas! With a menu boasting nearly 200 items at each outlet, The Chatpata Affairs offers a mouthwatering array of choices from breakfast to dinner, including fusion dishes like Chaat, Bhalle Chaat, Papri Chaat, Badam Milk, Rolls, Sandwiches, and Shakes. Originally from a small town in Rajasthan, Shiju moved to Delhi in 1997, where he began his career at Pizza Hut. He shared, “I was earning only Rs. 5000-6000 per month for almost a year straight. It was tough to manage rent, electricity, and food.” After over two decades of experience, including serving as CEO of Southern Fried Chicken, Shiju’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch The Chatpata Affairs with an investment of just Rs. 5 lakh and a small, dedicated team. What began with a few menu items has blossomed into a thriving food chain with a presence across 50 locations nationwide, including prominent spots like Church Street in Bangalore, Nanganalur in Chennai, Ambience Mall in Gurgaon, and various universities in Hyderabad. Starting with a modest revenue of around Rs. 2 lakh per month from just two outlets, the venture embraced a franchise model after two years and has since experienced explosive growth. In FY-23, revenue skyrocketed to Rs. 6 crores and is projected to reach Rs. 8 crores in FY-24! The Gurugram-based venture plans to expand to 100 outlets by March 2025 and aims for 500 outlets by 2027, with exciting prospects for growth in the Middle East, Europe, and the US. While Shiju has grand expansion plans, he remains committed to ensuring food quality is always the top priority. As he wisely states, “I believe entrepreneurship is a journey of patience and perseverance. It’s not a lottery ticket to instant wealth or success.” ------------------------------------------ I interviewed Shiju Pappen for Startup Pedia. Have you ever enjoyed a gulab jamun with your quick service restaurant (QSR) meal and wondered how it stays so fresh? That might be thanks to SCANDALous Foods (ADITOF), a #Nashik-based company founded in 2022 by Sanket S and #PraveshAmin. Their vision? To revolutionize the frozen dessert market with single-serve, blast-frozen Indian sweets that cater to the growing demand in QSRs, hotels, and corporate catering channels. With Sanket S’s 14+ years of experience in the food industry, he recognized a major gap in post-meal desserts. Traditional Indian sweets were either unavailable or too difficult to store long-term. This is where SCANDALous Foods (ADITOF) steps in—offering products that are frozen to retain their taste and freshness, and can be stored for up to six months without compromising quality. From gulab jamun to rasmalai and jalebi, the company has created a menu that addresses both the consumer’s sugar cravings and the restaurants' need for convenience. With a production capacity of 750 kilos per day and partnerships with major names like Zepto and Swiggy, SCANDALous Foods (ADITOF) is rapidly scaling. Their goal? To continue innovating, expand into the GCC market, and eventually launch a direct-to-consumer (D2C) model with cloud kitchens and “Mithai Parlours” for Indian sweets. At EvolveX Accelerator, we’re proud to support startups like SCANDALous Foods (ADITOF) in realizing their vision and taking their businesses to new heights. Starting a Food Business in 2025, may go wrong if you miss these! Let's first, get down to the facts of the food business industry in India - 👉🏻- Market Size: The Indian restaurant industry is valued at approximately ₹5 lakh crore (₹5 trillion) as of recent estimates and is projected to grow at a CAGR of 10-15% in the next five years. 👉🏻- Contribution to GDP: The industry contributes about 2.1% to India's GDP and employs over 7 million people, making it a significant part of the economy. 👉🏻- According to industry reports, approximately 20-25 new food and restaurant businesses are launched every hour in India, ranging from small eateries and cafes to food trucks, cloud kitchens, and large-scale restaurants. 👉🏻- High Failure Rate: Approximately 60-70% of new food businesses in India fail within the first 1-2 years of operation, consistent with global trends in the restaurant industry. Considering the facts above food business is a very lucrative business to jump into and ensure that you will succeed in it! With changing and fast moving treads, the present majority of the populations are impulse purchases who have been flooded with too many options to juggle around, in turn making consumers jump all around instead of sticking to one place! This behaviour has severe impacts on new businesses, and evidently more in the food sector. But here are 3 things a new food entrepreneur can do to succeed in the food industry - ✅1. Start Small - Take out less investments and test out your product among your friends, peers, and your potential customers. Build a feedback loop and a customer journey loop at the same time. (You can DM me to understand on this more). ✅2. Focus on Tier II City Expansion: With relatively low but good disposable income in hands, but with hugh aspirations and status beliefs, Tier II cities in India are the un-taped goldmine for scale. With limited options and the need for experience, this is a perfect opportunity for many. ✅3. Curate a menu with less than 20 Items! : Focus on a few, and master to a level where no one can ignore it. Start with limited SKU's and once which have replicable formulas. Best Case studies for the same are restaurants like - RAMESHWARAM CAFE, and NACHIYAR CAFE, which are both located in Bangalore, which have started with limited SKU's and eventually expanded their menu for variety. ✅Bonus Insight: Focus initially more and spend more on Content & Marketing to build awareness and distribution. So, plan your food business with these things in mind, and I am sure to promise you will end up doing good unlike the rest! For any doubts, or to understand these subjects better, you can DM me at Cavien Redd Thank you! 🙌 #Foodsector #foodbusiness #founder #entrepreneurs #2025 #startegies #bangalore #mumbai #rameshwaramcafe #restaurants #food #insights #india

What can be more "Chatpata" than an Indian street food affair? Taking inspiration from the "Chatpata" vibe of Indian street foods and the sweet and salty "Affair" of spices in Indian food, Shiju Pappen from Gurugram founded the food venture "The Chatpata Affair" in 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. The food entrepreneur is determined to give Indian street food its deserved place by bringing regional delicacies into the limelight while keeping it all vegetarian and hygienic. The vision of The Chatpata Affairs's founder behind this tangy venture is as ambitious as it is delicious: to make Indian street foods the "king" in front of burgers and pizzas worldwide. The food venture outlets have a delicious menu of nearly 200 items each, from breakfast dishes to dinner options, including fusion dishes such as Chaat, Bhalle chaat, Papri Chaat, Badam milk, Rolls, Sandwiches, Shakes, etc. Shiju comes from a small town in Rajasthan. He moved to Delhi for work in 1997 and started working with Pizza Hut as a team member, where he would do everything from cleaning the restaurant to serving customers and cleaning utensils. Shiju, during the interview with Startup Pedia, said, "I was earning only Rs. 5000-6000 per month for almost a year straight. It was tough to manage rent, electricity and food." With over 2 decades of experience, he became the CEO of Southern Fried Chicken. He was managing operations across multiple countries. However, he had a constant urge to establish his own venture. He started The Chatpata Affairs with an investment of only Rs. 5 lakh and a small dedicated team taking up multiple responsibilities - from cooking to customer service. Launching with only a few menu items, the food venture has now burgeoned into a food chain with a presence across 50 locations nationwide. Among the 50 existing locations, Chatpata Affairs has its prominent location on Church Street, Bangalore; Nanganalur, Chennai; Ambience Mall, Gurgaon; and some universities in Hyderabad, among others. The food venture generated around Rs. 2 lakh per month with only two outlets in the initial years. However, after two years, it ventured into the franchisee model and is now growing like a Chinese bamboo tree. In FY-23, The Chatpata Affairs revenue skyrocketed to Rs. 6 crores, which then increased to Rs. 8 crore in FY-24. The Gurugram-based food venture plans to reach 100 outlets by the end of March 2025. By 2027, the food venture is expected to burgeon into 500 outlets. The venture also plans to expand across the Middle East, Europe and the US. While the founder has an ambitious expansion plan, he aims to make sure that food quality will always be the priority. "I believe entrepreneurship is a journey with patience and perseverance. And, not at all a lottery ticket to instant wealth or success," signed off Shiju Pappen, founder of The Chatpata Affairs. 🌟 How We Turned a Small Kitchen Idea into India's Largest Salad Brand 🌟 In 2021, my wife Riya Rohra had a vision to bring healthy and delicious meals to people across India. What started as a small experiment in our home kitchen has now grown into SaladO India, the largest salad brand in the country, with over 200 kitchens nationwide. 🥗🚀 While Riya's passion for creating nutritious salads laid the foundation, my role focused on scaling the business—building a robust team, securing franchise models, and expanding our reach across multiple cities. Together along with our team, we took this simple idea and transformed it into a thriving business that stands out in the crowded food industry. 🌟 Here’s what helped us succeed: 1. Persistence Pays Off: The path to success is rarely linear. Early failures in my previous business taught me resilience. Never give up, even when the road gets tough. 2. Build Strong Teams: Success in business isn't about one person; it's about the people around you. A strong team can take you further than you ever imagined. 3. Innovate Relentlessly: In today’s fast-paced world, you need to stay ahead by constantly innovating. SaladO expanded from cloud kitchens to franchise cafés because we weren’t afraid to evolve. Here is a future: - We are launching our Mobile app to deliver our Healthy Eating - Exotic Salad's, Kito Food, Satvic Food, Healthy Rice Bowls at a door step of our customers in top 15 cities of India in a subscription model. - We have recently launched India's First Healthy Sweet Brand Called MithaLite where we have Indian Sweets like KajuKatli, Peda, Jalebi, Cookies, Gulab Jamun etc made up of millets and natural sweeteners where we are able to reduce calories by 65-70%. -We are also Piloting India's First Healthy Cafe - SaladO Cafe, where we have launched food innovations like Salad Burger, Salad Pizza, Salad Wraps, Salad Dosa, Salad Sandwiches and so on. We have 6 running franchise outlets in India - We are researching to launch Healthy Cakes, Healthy Icecreams, Healthy Biryani. Mission is very simple - To replace Unhealthy eating with a healthier options without compromising on taste. Who knows? We just might become the next Indian brand to conquer the global stage. Fingers crossed for the journey ahead! 🌍✨ Let’s connect if you’d like to discuss about partnership, investments, vendor ship, franchising or healthy living! 🌱 https://lnkd.in/gvZ_frjb #Franchising #Investors #Healthyeating #Investment #Kamrohra
