Nine HKU projects receive funding under NSFC/RGC Joint and Collaborative Research Schemes Nine research projects by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have secured funding under the National Natural Science Foundation for China and the Research Grants Council (NSFC/RGC) 2023/24 Exercise. Specifically, eight projects were funded by the NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme (JRS), and one project was funded by the NSFC/RGC Collaborative Research Scheme (CRS). The funding scheme aims to promote interdisciplinary collaborative research among research teams and universities in Hong Kong and the mainland, jointly enhancing research output and impact for both areas. This article shows that few Nobel Prizes have been awarded for research done since 1990 and that the relative importance of Nobel Prize winning research in physics has dropped over the last 100 years according to a survey of leading physicists.   Asked to compare pairs of Nobel Prize winning research, physicists judged that the most important research was done in the 1920s, followed by 1910s and 1930s. The importance of research done in the 1980s was judged to be 1/3 less important than research done in 1920s.   For chemistry and medicine, although research for their prizes do not show any decrease in importance over last 100 years, given the higher #university funding, PhD students, and publications, we would expect to see rising importance for both chemistry and medicine.   Perhaps most importantly, few awards have been given to #scientists for work done since 1990, thus causing figures in article to show no data not only for #physics, but also for chemistry and medicine. Recent exceptions include Katalin Kariko’s award for RNA-based vaccines and Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier’s award for gene editing.    Nobel Prizes are mostly won by academics, but corporate researchers were once big recipients. Nobel Prize winning research was done at Bell Labs (11 winners), IBM (5), DuPont (3), and GE (2).   Even among 21st century Nobel Prize awards that involved successfully commercialized research, corporate researchers played a big role: Katalina Kariko (2023), two of three winners (2019) for lithium-ion batteries worked at Exxon and Sony, one of three (2014) for semiconductor lasers worked at Bell Labs, both 2009 winners (one for charged coupled devices and one for glass fiber) worked at Standard Telecom Lab and Bell Labs, and two of three winners for integrated circuits (2000) worked at Texas Instruments and RCA.   Nevertheless, over the last 70 years, there has been an increase in basic and applied research done by universities, and a recent Economist article (which I posted last night and was based on academic research) concluded that universities are behind the recent decline in successfully commercialized #science-based #technologies.   “Why do companies struggle to use ideas produced by #universities? The loss of the corporate lab is one part of the answer.” Another reason “concerns universities. Free from the demands of corporate overlords, research focuses more on satisfying geeks’ curiosity or boosting citation counts than it does on finding breakthroughs that will change the world or make money. In moderation, #research for research’s sake is no bad thing; some breakthrough technologies, such as penicillin, were discovered almost by accident. New York University has been recognized as a Rising Star by Nature Index and was ranked #8 research institution in North America—up from #25 in 2016—based on increase in articles in top science journals. “Our designation as a Rising Star and top-10 ranking is yet another proof-point of the growth and momentum of NYU’s research enterprise; the high-caliber and impactful work our researchers undertake each day in their labs; and the University’s increased commitment to science, technology, and the generation of knowledge,” says Stacie Grossman Bloom, PhD, NYU’s vice provost for research and chief research officer. Over 10% of the Indian researchers identified by Stanford University in its world's top 2% scientists list in 2024 are from Tamil Nadu universities. Among the 5351 Indian scientists named in the list, around 537 are from the state. The 2024 rankings, released on September 16 in collaboration with Elsevier Data repository, is an updated science-wide author database having classified scientists into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields. The research articles updated to the end of 2023 have been considered for this. Accordingly, the Stanford University ranking list has included 2,23,152 scientists in the top 2% of the world, and among them, 5,351 are from Indian universities which was 4,635 in 2023. An analysis of the list of top scientists reveals that 537 scientists from the universities of Tamil Nadu, which is more than 10% of the number of Indian scientists featured in the list. The top institutes from Tamil Nadu named in the list are 62 scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology- Madras, 59 from Vellore Institute of Technology, 35 from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, 26 from Saveetha School of Engineering, 25 from Saveetha Dental College and Hosptials, 19 each from Bharathiyar university, National Institute of Technology Tiruchy, Saveetha Institute of Medical and technical sciences, and 18 from Anna university.

Chinese scientists recently gained the edge over America and the EU in two closely watched measures of high-quality science One measure of the quality of a country’s scientific research is the number of high-impact papers produced each year—that is, publications that are cited most often by other scientists in their own, later work. In 2003 America produced 20 times more of these high-impact papers than China. By 2013 America produced about four times the number of top papers and, in 2022, China had surpassed both America and the entire EU China now leads the world on other benchmarks. It tops the Nature Index which counts the contributions to articles that appear in a set of prestigious journals. In 2014, China came second, but its contribution to eligible papers was less than a third of America’s. By 2023 China had reached the top spot According to the Leiden Ranking of the volume of scientific research output, there are now six Chinese universities or institutions in the world top ten, and seven according to the Nature Index. That’s amazing. They’ve done that in a generation The old science world order, dominated by America, Europe and Japan, is coming to an end Today Engineering is the ultimate Chinese discipline However, China leads the world in the physical sciences, chemistry and Earth and environmental sciences. But America and Europe still have substantial leads in both general biology and medical sciences Applied research is a Chinese strength. The country dominates publications on perovskite solar panels, for example, which offer the possibility of being far more efficient than conventional silicon cells The reshaping of Chinese science has been achieved by focusing on three areas: money, equipment and people. In real terms, China’s spending on R&D has grown 16-fold since 2000 The current China government plan aims to boost research in quantum technologies, ai, semiconductors, neuroscience, genetics and biotechnology, regenerative medicine, and exploration of “frontier areas” like deep space, deep oceans and Earth’s poles Creating world-class universities and government institutions has also been a part of China’s scientific development plan. And a priority is building the workforce. China now employs more researchers than both America and the entire EU China has also splurged on scientific kit. The country is now home to the world’s most sensitive ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray detector (test aspects of Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity). Europe and America have plenty of cool kit of their own, but China is rapidly adding hardware The areas where America and Europe still hold the lead are unlikely to be safe for long.
