Today is HPV Awareness Day As someone who has dedicated 15 years of my career to the National Cervical Screening Programme within the NHS, today holds a special significance for me. HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a key concern in our collective fight against cervical cancer. It's a stark reminder that both awareness and action are crucial. HPV is a common virus with over 100 types, but it's the high-risk strains that can lead to cervical cancer. Astonishingly, almost all sexually active individuals will come into contact with HPV at some point in their lives. Yet, knowledge about its prevalence and impact remains low. During my time working as a Cytologist at the RCHT , I've seen firsthand the profound difference that early detection and intervention can make. Cervical screening (or the smear test) is not just a routine examination; it's a lifesaving intervention that can detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous. This HPV Awareness Day, I want to emphasise the importance of attending cervical screening appointments. It's a pivotal step in cervical cancer prevention, offering a chance to catch and address potential issues early. To everyone reading this: please prioritise your health. If you or someone you know is due for a screening, encourage them to book their appointment. It's a small act that could change the course of someone's life. Have you had an abnormal pap smear? Maybe you’ve had more than just one and the most likely culprit is high-risk HPV. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus in the world affecting both men and women. The good news is that a robust immune system often clears the infection within 2 years. Ladies in your 20s, let's talk about the truth behind Pap smears and cervical cancer! 💁♀️ If you're in your 20s, it's recommended to have a Pap test every three years, even if you've had the HPV vaccine. Why? Well, around 80% of sexually active women in their 20s are infected by HPV, but don't worry – our bodies usually fight it off. Sometimes, the infection can affect Pap test results. If your test shows abnormal cells, it's often linked to HPV, so don't panic! We usually follow up with another Pap smear, giving your body time to fight off the infection. If abnormalities persist, a biopsy may be done to check for precancerous or cancerous cells. Early detection means swift action to keep you healthy! There’s a myriad of reasons why they should be vaccinated, not least because they are also at risk of developing an HPV cancer.
