Two years may be a long time in politics, but some things stay the same, despite the world changing so drastically. Such is the blend of the progressive, enlightened and stimulating that is the #FutureOfBritain. Much-boosted by the change of government, and good to see the likes of Jack Straw, Greg Clarke, Daniel Finkelstein, David Gauke and Peter Kellner all mixing. William Hague and Wes Streeting were the star turns, the former strong on making the civil service machine work (beware progress that is “ongoing”), the latter right now getting to grips with that on health. He laid out a powerful vision for the UK’s massive healthcare system as a source of economic growth and innovation and spoke persuasively about turning from cure to prevention. That's a familiar theme here: finding the time and space to think strategically, alongside the firefighting. Hopefully stability (compared to 5 Health Ministers in 2 and a half years) will be a good foundation. Tech generally, and AI specifically, were the golden thread of the day, and the need to invest in, anticipate and harness this inevitable future, rather than follow and be subject to it, but crime, education and climate change (Greg Jackson was particularly good) got a related look-in. So did Europe, with an enlightening session featuring former Prime Ministers Sanna Marin and Matteo Renzi, who addressed head on the need to oppose the populist right, Renzi in particular strong, coming from Italy, “the Silicon Valley of populism”. They bemoaned policy being driven by the world of social media, where outcomes in 20 years can be seen as less important than tweets in 2 hours. The message was that hope and optimism are the best weapons progressives have, with actual delivery needed to drain the wells of fear, resentment and injustice that populism feeds off. Having just heard Wes Street be quite radical on healthcare, another European PM’s dictum sprang to mind, Jean Claude Junker musing that “we all know what to do, but we don’t know how to get re-elected once we’ve done it.” Let’s see if the new Government can learn enough lessons from the outside world to untie that particular knot. And Frank Mckenna, we have to stop not-meeting like this
