Improving maternal and newborn health is critical, especially in the global south countries, where 70% of global maternal deaths occur. Educated and integrated midwives can help prevent two-thirds of these deaths by providing comprehensive care. Despite advancements, maternal mortality remains high, with 287,000 global maternal deaths reported by WHO. Key challenges include inadequate funding, uncoordinated procurement of essential supplies, and overlapping crises. Investments in primary healthcare systems and a trained health workforce are essential. Innovations like the E-MOTIVE package show promise, potentially preventing 1.9 million deaths by 2030. Investing in women's health not only saves lives but also boosts economic growth. Healthy women contribute to the workforce, driving productivity. Addressing maternal and newborn health can lead to a cycle of prosperity that benefits society as a whole. As someone passionate about global health, I believe we need to focus on practical solutions like educating midwives and ensuring coordinated supply chains. Investing in women's health is not just a moral imperative but an economic one, too. As a new government takes shape in Pakistan, Samia Liaquat Ali Khan writes, "given the state of polycrisis that exists in Pakistan today, policymakers will need to address citizens’ concerns and the economy simultaneously. One way of doing this is to understand where gaps are most apparent, and show early successes through tackling low-hanging fruit in the immediate short term." To interpret-by-paraphrase, what she's trying to suggest is that gender-sensitive public programming - in particular, targeting health - can allow a new government to "balance" economic considerations with wider impact that it can also banner as an "early success". Indeed, women's health-focused public infrastructure - including requisite human resources - is already in place. Compared to, say, building a dam, public health programmes generally tend to be "cheaper". Over wider time horizons, they promise considerably bigger "bang for the buck". In fact, Samia notes in her writing that for every $1 invested in women, the RoI is $2 - or, a 100%. So, ultimately, it really comes down to clarity of thought, a sense of purpose and broad re-prioritisation. Given that several women political leaders are coming into power henceforward - in fact, Punjab is getting its first ever female Chief Minister - it would appear that time may be ripe for just such a re-prioritisation. As we continue to face the impacts of COVID-19, we acknowledge the vital importance of access to essential healthcare services and resources to prevent the spread of disease. We are working to improve access to health information, education, and services for women and girls in our communities, including programs focused on maternal and child health, sexual and reproductive health, and hygiene and sanitation. We believe that prioritizing health is a fundamental part of our gender transformation and community development efforts. By investing in health, we can help to create stronger, more resilient communities that are better prepared to face the challenges ahead. Improving access, equity, and quality of care for all Rwandans: The vital aim of We for Health.

Research conducted in collaboration with UNICEF estimated the number of South African children in need of palliative care at 800,000 – with fewer than 5% receiving it. Experts believe that figure is closer to one million today. Access to palliative care is a basic human right that most of us will likely require at some point in our lives, either for ourselves or a family member. To this end, Paedspal has rapidly grown to respond to an urgent need. On average, Paedspal provides over 4,000 palliative care consultations to children and their families in Cape Town. With a staff of 16, Paedspal is the largest palliative care centre in the country dedicated to children. The early delivery of palliative care reduces unnecessary hospital admissions and the use of health services. Research undertaken by the South African Medical Research Council in 2017, published in a paper titled Saving Lives, Saving Costs: Investment Case for Home Based Care Workers in South Africa, shows that the public health sector could save as much as R3,3,-billion per year if only 50% of those who require palliative care were cared for at home, rather than in hospitals.
