We conclude that cable routes should carefully consider locally-variable drivers of hazard frequency and magnitude. Consideration should be given both to instantaneous events (e.g. landslides, tropical cyclones) as well as longer-term, sustained impacts (e.g. seabed currents that circulate even in deep water). Multiple factors can combine to increase the risk posed to subsea cables, hence a holistic approach is essential to assess the compounded effects of both natural processes and human activities in the future.

Live monitoring of extreme weather Jakob on subsea fibre cables is shown below. In difference from terrestrial cables, subsea fibre cables are generally not vulnerable to extreme weather, but heavy waves and other weather related effects still impact State of Polarization (SoP). By measuring small SoP variations in a cable in the wester part of Norway, the weather can be monitored.

🌊 You might think this is just another chart, but it’s a groundbreaking innovation! The team at Tampnet is developing a method to monitor extreme weather events like Storm Jakob by analyzing subtle changes in the State of Polarization (SoP) within subsea fiber cables. 🌧️ Storm Jakob, which struck Norway’s west coast on October 31, 2024, brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, leading to significant disruptions in the region. This approach can provide real-time insights into environmental conditions. 🌐 With a million kilometer of subsea cables around the world, this technology has the potential to transform how we monitor and respond to oceanic and weather activity on a global scale. 🌍 These cables, which connect countries and continents, could one day serve as a vast sensing network for real-time environmental insights. 📈 The plot might represent a preliminary result from the real-time SoP monitoring. While further data processing is necessary for scientific use, the clear correlation with extreme weather events is a promising starting point. 👏 Kudos to the Tampnet team for pioneering such innovative uses of subsea infrastructure. By leveraging SoP monitoring, this approach can bring enhanced situational awareness during extreme weather events, potentially improving response strategies and mitigating impacts. Shore power connections are established for modification purposes. The primary reason cited for the delay in implementing shore power retrofits on ships has been the insufficient availability of port infrastructure. This obstacle has been a common explanation for the slow progress in this area as more vessels seek to make the switch. Earth pit: An earth pit in an electrical system refers to a pit which is dug in earth with some standard filling. Uses: Usually, earth pits are used for safety against short circuits. They also act as a reference point for your different electrical power sources. length in earth: It is usually of 3meter deep in earth and a normal building require at least 4 earthpits.
