GLENCORE’S 2023 CARBON EMISSIONS RISE 8.8% DESPITE NEW CLIMATE PLAN In its latest Climate Action Transition Plan (CATP) spanning from 2024 to 2026, global mining giant Glencore affirms its commitment to meeting emission reduction targets. Published on March 20, the CATP outlines Glencore’s trajectory to achieve a 15% reduction in emissions by the end of 2026 and a more ambitious 50% reduction by 2035, encompassing Scope 1, 2, and 3 industrial carbon dioxide emissions. 👉 New Insights on Scaling-Up Methane Abatement in Australian Coal Mining Andrew Gorringe weighs in with fresh commentary on the pressing issue of #methane emissions from #coal mining in Australia. Here's what you need to know: ▪ Open-Cut Mines: More than half of the methane emissions from Australian coal #mining come from open-cut mines, jumping to 60% when combined operations are considered. ▪ Pre-Drainage Practices: While pre-drainage of coal seams in open-cut mining has been limited, it's the underground mines that have seen more focus due to safety regulations. ▪ Call for Action: There's an urgent need to extend support for methane abatement projects beyond underground mines to open-cuts. This is crucial to prevent the expansion of large open-pit mines from jeopardising emission reduction targets. Methane, commonly known as natural or 'fossil gas', is a potent #greenhouse gas when leaked into the atmosphere, having a greater warming effect than #CO2. The NSW government is creating Future Jobs and Investment Authorities to support coal mining regions during the transition and decline of coal mining, burning and exports over the next twenty years. It has also committed to ensuring its climate change goals and principles are considered in the planning process for coal mine expansion projects and reviewing the terrible Strategic Statement on Coal this year. These are all good things... but... the issues paper for the Future Jobs and Investment Authorities presents the IEA's "Stated Policies" scenario as the future of world coal demand - consistent with global average warming above 2 degrees and utterly at odds with Australia and New South Wales' legislated climate change goals. An issues paper that purports to be about supporting coal communities needs to be honest with the people in those communities about what NSW's climate change commitments mean for the future of coal exports and what its assumptions about coal demand means in terms of catastrophic climate change. Coal mining communities will bear the cost of this dishonesty, because the government has not come to terms with severity of the changes that will occur over the next twenty years and the impact that will have on the Hunter particularly. NEW | 🇦🇺’s government is considering to change how it reports emissions from its open-cut coal mines. However, the proposed switch from state-based emission factors to unverified company-led estimates could hide MILLIONS of tonnes of coal mine #methane emissions. I heard about the decarbonization efforts by the mining industry at #pdac2024. Denise Johnson gave a detailed keynote on the challenges of electrifying a fleet of haul trucks, shovels, drill rigs and other major equipment. Sepanta Dorri took a hard-nosed look at how Teck Resources Limited should make the business case for decarbonization. Torsten Lichtenau laid out some of the challenges ahead. All this should make me feel optimistic, yet I remain uncomfortable. Plans for 30% emission reductions by 2030 / 90% reduction by 2050 seem leisurely compared to how rapidly our climate is deteriorating. They are realistic within the constraints of capital allocation within each company, but are they in step with the changing climate? It's a tough ask to tell them to go faster. In fact, they risk being penalized for it. But politics is fickle. It does not respond to incremental change but to crises. The crisis we are heading for will need to be big enough to bring to the table adversaries like China, India and the USA. Along with the EU, such a gathering would combine over 75% of global emissions and economic power. An agreement from this conference can only result in one outcome: mandatory emission reductions, i.e., government regulation of emissions. When could this happen? I'm betting it will happen by 2030. Would it respect plans to attain Net Zero by 2050? Fat Chance. However, the Big Four agreement would allow government subsidies to sponsor the transition ... a better use of the $4 trillion currently subsidizing the oil industry. That money will come with strings attached, like very aggressive energy transition plans. It'll be tough, but do-able. If this is true, what's the takeaway? Only the nimble will survive the climate crisis, and likely will grow. Those who can't adapt fast enough will be greatly diminished, or will perish.

The US #cleanenergy goals may be unattainable without American mining. Minerals like #copper are invaluable for green technologies like EVs and wind turbines – but without proper permitting actions for mining extraction, key climate laws like the Inflation Reduction Act will not be enough to build out clean energy infrastructure without relying on imports from other countries. Biden states he wants “Made in America,” but you can’t have that without “Mine in America” first.

Breaking 🚨 Last month, the court agreed with Friends of the Earth and South Lakes Action on Climate Change that the lifetime emissions of a proposed coal mine in Whitehaven (mostly from burning coal) weren't properly considered, and its approval was unlawful. With the deadline to appeal having now passed, it's now up to Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to reconsider the original planning application by West Cumbria Mining – unless the company decides to abandon its plans by withdrawing it. The government must ensure that West Cumbria, and areas like it, are at the forefront of the transition to a green economy to get the jobs and investment that is urgently required.
