Great overview of NBAA's AAM panel by Dawn Zoldi. Of note for those interested in AAM is the diverse estimates for normalization of operations in the US and worldwide. While there seems to be momentum developing towards an accelerated certification process, it will be interesting to see how actual deployment timelines match up with projected ones. What about AAM and its future are most interesting to you?

AgustaWestland Helicopter Division, Italy: I once worked on these, not the A129 model, but a civilian four seater A109. This model and the twelve seater A139 are literally about the most reliable Helicopters in the World. The Agusta aircraft designers differ from others, it seems they wanted zero mechanical failures within the mainteance time span. Also was priveldged to met one of their senior design engineers in 2009. Only have one bone to chew with them: The maintenance PM intervals for the main gearbox and rotorhead in the A109 Manual are far too short, such as 50 Hr operational intervals. Agusta should review customers PM findings carefully [for all models] and based upon that data, make the necessary changes [if any failures found] to redesign components that failed early and then increase the minimum PM interval to 200 Hrs. The first of many deliveries over the next 12 months.

Dear fellow Aviators, Today I am not sharing beautiful pictures from our world 🌎 wide journeys, I feel the need after reading this article from AIN, to give me 2cents. First of all, I am not and never will, judge those pilots at the controls, only a Safety Board, NTSB, Accident Investigators should ever comment on the root cause and an incident itself. From a training & standards PoV, it is always easier to assess and judge from the outside, but again it would be unfair and not professional. Nevertheless, having read the below extract it seems that as so often human error, commercial pressure, poor judgment and situational awareness and most importantly s lack in good training may have led to this runway overrun by this G150. Everyone can make up their own mind and picture here, but we as pilots are „paid to say NO and not paid to say YES and make it work at all costs“. A proper TEM Briefing (Threat and Error Management) MUST FORM an essential and vital part of any briefing, whether it is for take off and departure or approach and landing. During exactly such a briefing, the pilot(s) have time to reward think about what the THREATS to „this very phase of flight are“. It does not matter how many times you have safely taken off or landed in- or out of an airport, maybe this time you won’t because either your luck runs out, or the application of your skills (whether they are good in general or limited) is poor. If on top the aircraft has some kind of degraded status of any kind, may it be reverse thrust or something else not working properly, this might not be an issue on a 4000m runway, but it surely is on a small 4200ft strip. Again not judging at all but from a pure TRAINING & STANDARDS point of view, articles like this one (luckily not very often), give me the chills and make my own awareness rise even more. Let’s all learn from the mistakes & lost opportunities from others and make sure it does not happen again. Bless you all out there and fly safe!
