A Turkey, a Surgeon, and the Importance of Design #Thanksgiving2023 https://lnkd.in/geumhUeU Recently, I stumbled upon a humorous anecdote that perfectly illustrates the significance of design, particularly in today's rapidly evolving world. The story revolves around a surgeon and his investment banker friend. During a Thanksgiving dinner, the investment banker, with great pride, showcased his culinary skills by expertly carving the turkey. Impressed by his own precision, he turned to the surgeon and exclaimed, "Look how well I am carving this turkey, just like a surgeon!" The surgeon, unfazed by the boast, calmly replied, "Well, I'd like to see you stitch it back up again!" This simple exchange encapsulates the fundamental distinction between analysis and design. Analysis involves breaking down complex systems into smaller components to understand their mechanisms. While analysis is undoubtedly valuable, it often overlooks the crucial aspect of synthesis – putting the pieces back together to create something new and meaningful. Design, on the other hand, is the art of bringing fragmented elements into a cohesive whole, breathing life into novel ideas and transforming visions into reality. It's about understanding the user's needs, empathizing with their challenges, and crafting solutions that not only function but also resonate with their experiences. 💡 Come to talk about Transdisciplinarity and Design and take stock beyond *buzzwords* to outline an Agenda for Design Research at DRS2024 Boston of Design Research Society (DRS) Led by Julieta Matos Castaño, Mascha van der Voort (representing the Transdisciplinary Collaboration Hub of the DesignLab of the University of Twente), and guest panelists Frederick van Amstel, Dan Lockton, Femke Coops, Iohanna Nicenboim, and Joseph Lindley. Transdisciplinarity has been defined and practiced in various ways. However, there is still unclarity, tensions, and opportunities for transdisciplinarity in design research, and it is essential to go beyond buzzwords to take stock and outline an agenda for design. The conversation focuses primarily on participatory transdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity as social practice to explore: 1) How does design research engage in transdisciplinarity to integrate designerly knowledge with other epistemologies, lived experiences, values, and ways of knowing? 1b) How does transdisciplinarity challenge or contribute to extending designerly knowledge production to a plural ecosystem of interconnected actors? 1c) How may transdisciplinarity foster ethical and responsible social transformations? One of design research' failures is to mistake lack of immediate commercial and societal impact for failure. The ever stronger call for academia to solve current problems really bugs me. What's more, even academia itself is starting to believe it can have immediate impact. In my experience, for new design research work to be adopted into the mainstream takes around 20-30 years. Product success hinges on so many factors, a working process or demonstrator is just one of them. Once you have shown a first concept it may take decades more for all planets to be in alignment." * * * * * Design Research Failures is an open-ended conversation with contributors responding to one single question: "In what way has Design Research failed in the last 50 years?" It is intended as a critical, constructive hinge between past and future, vocalizing how Design Research has failed and, conversely, how it might succeed looking ahead. We, like many of our generation, spent years diligently honing our design skills with pen and paper. #week_5 Wrapping up this week with 3 worth-sharing moments. 💛 💡1 / The Synergetic Model (check my model below!) We create a tetrahedron model regarding our field of interest. It’s about the nodes, the way you pull the synergies, and how you develop the void in between. After sharing with peers, I’d like to adjust my nodes in the second version, which points out the core reason why I am into these fields. This model serves as a guide to lead me through planning my study and work in the short term. 📝 2 / Workshop for Design Principles and Practice Splitting groups, we researched the food truck based on the AEIOU model (Action/Environment/Interaction/Object/User). During the workshop, we discovered some problems and ideas for innovations and even sketched a revised version of the space design. It was our first group work in the semester; I love the vibe of each of us diving into the problem scope and working out solutions with commitment. I can't wait for more teaming opportunities ahead! 🧚🏻♀️ 3 / Inspiration for Transition Design Human-centered design is a trending methodology. However, it’s not the only thing happening in design. These weeks, I’ve learned a new field: Transition Design, a long-term and ecological process to solve so-called “wicked problems” given its broad coverage of the past/present/future and multiple stakeholders. I got goosebumps when guests from the colloquium drew a vision of solving wicked problems in a thoughtful and persistent mindset: “What and how are you going to contribute to the world through design?”

What I love about multi-species research and design, is that people come up with new ways of doing design. In this article, the authors bring design research provocation and prototype into one concept: “As the word provotype suggests, this critical and provocative reflection is mediated through a prototype or a designed artifact, which means thanks to a concrete experience with it. Contrarily to a prototype, a provotype is focused on future possibilities and does not represent the final definition of a design proposal. As a matter of fact, a provotype may appear as an unfinished prototype, since it aims to explore future possibilities through the prototyping of a provocation and can be implemented according to the contributions derived from the audience participation. A provotype can therefore detect new gaps by framing alternative presents or even future perspectives and visions since its goal is not to give well-defined answers to a problem but to detect possible issues and questions related to the future complexities” 🌾 What are you provotyping?
