We’re deeply grateful to House Majority Leader Hon. Hakeem Jeffries for joining us today at Paerdegat Basin in #Canarsie, Brooklyn, to present $968,000 in funding for Billion Oyster Project’s expansion of the reef's 480,000 oyster deployment in 2019. This event was a powerful reminder of the importance of community-driven environmental efforts. Paerdegat Basin, home to NYC’s Black-owned boat club and longtime site partners, Paerdegat Yach Club, holds a significant place in the history of Canarsie and the wider Brooklyn community. It’s an honor to work with and learn from our neighbors who’ve preserved their practice of stewardship. With the support of leaders like Hakeem Jeffries, we’re making strides toward a more resilient New York Harbor. Leader Jeffries’ focus on community-based environmental projects is vital to the success of initiatives like ours. Together, we’re not just restoring our waters; we’re revitalizing the communities that depend on and deserve to enjoy them. Thank you to Governor Kathy Hochul for $500k in environmental protection funding for oyster restoration. It was a pleasure to welcome DEC Commissioner Sean Mahar Senator Sanders, and Assembly Woman Stacey Pfieffer Amato to Bayswater Point State Park in Queens this morning. More oysters are acclimating to their new home in the waters off Terminal 4 at JFK airport. Today is #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay. We often talk about limited accessibility to New York Harbor across our city; imagine the added challenge of accessing our greatest natural resource with a disability. In an effort to make Billion Oyster Project’s field stations and exhibit spaces ADA compliant, we're focused on rolling out language and mobility assistance at our events, including hiring sign language interpreters at community gatherings. We also partner with organizations like ADAPT Community Network - the leading human service not-for-profit and a pioneer in providing cutting edge programs and services for people with disabilities. Every day, they build a more inclusive world for thousands of New Yorkers through education, technology, health, residential and recreational programs in all five boroughs.
