[Management vs. Leadership] In today's dynamic workplaces, even after so much information available on leadership, many leaders are just managers. Management focuses on setting rules, enforcing protocols, and maintaining order. It stops most organizations from being innovative. Leadership is about empowering individuals to reach their full potential, fostering innovation, and inspiring others to greatness. Degrees can make you a manager. Only intent can make you a leader.

It’s easy for leaders to sit in a room and talk about change, or to dissect the complexities of their organization. But to actually effect change, leaders have to take action. The first step is to help others work towards the goals you’re setting. If you want your company to provide high-quality care, take care of your providers. If you want to elevate your company’s service, enable your employees to meet higher standards. If you want to be a good leader, help others develop leadership skills. I firmly believe in this, and the last example really resonates with me. I’ve become a better leader as I’ve worked with others who want to become leaders themselves. As leaders, it can be tempting to talk the talk without walking the walk. Especially in the field of behavior analysis, we tend to speak about industry problems as if they're purely cerebral issues. But they’re not. At some point, you have to stop talking and start doing.

welcome back to #LagniappeLeadership! week 3 is all about finding solutions: “let’s focus on how” as leaders, we often feel the need to have (and give) all the answers to all the questions advanced leadership requires a mindset shift from “yes/no” answers to considering “how” the team can find a solution it’s how we move from subject matter expertise to leading and coaching responding with “let’s focus on how” …sparks collaboration, not confrontation …challenges us to stretch our imagination …turns "impossible" into "challenge accepted" pro tip - try using “let’s focus on how” when someone asks you “can we do this” and watch it transform the discussion what would you add? PS - we’re *all* leaders: thought leaders, family leaders, community leaders, and, yes, team leaders PPS - remember, 'lagniappe' (pronounced 'lan-yap') means "a little something extra." Each week this summer, I'll share a little extra something to elevate and enhance our leadership skills. (South Louisiana accent permitted and encouraged!)

As you and your organization start to plan for 2024, one of the most important issues to consider is the risk of the status quo. What happens if you do nothing to develop your talent/leadership bench strength? Many of my conversations over the last few months with HR, L&D, DE&I, and Operations teams have centered around concerns on developing the next generation of leaders. Sure, most organizations have programs or content to focus on the hard-skills and job specific knowledge, but how do you get someone to move from being a manager to a leader? We have seen a massive emphasis on personal and professional growth in the last few years, but if the roadmap to that growth isn't clear to your team members, will they stick around or look elsewhere? What happens if you just maintain the status quo? With Lake Forest Center for Leadership, we believe that leadership is learnable. Everyone has the potential to lead, but learning can't be relegated to a one-size-fits-all approach. Learning needs to be dynamic, engaging, and impactful - especially as you consider your target audience (emerging/front-line leaders, middle-managers, directors, & executives).
