This is such an important post because I don't think that folks in other industries fully understand what entertainment team members bring to the table. I made a post about this a few weeks back. As someone who works with all departments - development, field, post, network, studio, branding, etc. I spend some of my time speaking with leaders of other industries about why resumes with mostly entertainment experience are often overlooked. Entertainment and Media can be a bit of an unclear or stigmatized industry, most people don’t know exactly what we do, no matter the department. What I always share is that you want entertainment people working for you because our skillset is so broad, it can be implemented in almost any environment, and most of us are used to handling big budgets, tight calendars, all types of moving pieces, and endless departments and department members. Here I am, on the road again, here I am, up on the stage Here I go, playin' star again, there I go, turn the page I’ve been listening to Bob Seger’s classic anthem a lot this weekend, as I’ve had to process the news of my role at Penske Media being eliminated after just over a year. It’s never an easy reality to come to terms with, especially coming not two years since being affected by a wave of layoffs at Paramount Global, where I spent a decade of my career. The hits, as they say, keep coming. And they hurt. It’s not easy to have to figure out the best way to tell your daughter that we’re going to have to pause dance classes this fall or look your son in the eye when you let him know he may miss this next season of basketball. Those are the conversations that cut deepest. You must keep getting up after each one, dust yourself off and keep going. For yourself. For your family and the example that you’re setting for them. Every time you do, you get a little stronger, a little wiser and a little bolder. The mental and emotional blow takes a little less time to get over. And you realize that they may be able to knock you down, but they will not knock you out. I’m ready to try new things in a world that is changing faster than I can type this message; I’m willing to take my experience in media, marketing and entertainment and apply it wherever real opportunity presents itself.  I’m prepared to turn the page. This is how I plan to do it. 1.    I’m still going to be searching for the next great FT role, but while I do that… 2.    I’m open for consulting, freelance or fractional work. This may be where the business is headed, and I know I have much to offer many people and companies. 3.    Speaking of “where the business is headed,” I’ve finally come up with an idea for a YT channel/creator endeavor. This is a longer-term project but will be incredibly rewarding for me personally, once I’m able to get there, and I look forward to diving in. 4.    I’m going to make a more concerted effort to network with my many professional contacts here on this platform and beyond. To continue to learn, share and collaborate in alternative ways. I’ll be posting here more frequently, sharing my thoughts and reacting to yours. Maybe I’ll try guest-editing something or jump on someone’s podcast. 5.    Finally, I’m going with my gut moving forward, because it’s never let me down. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire – and there’s no reason to tell myself anything different for the sake of comfort or temporary convenience.   To anyone reading this – friends, former colleagues, mentors – please keep your ears and eyes open should you hear of great opportunities that you don’t need yourself. I’m open to hearing about anything and everything, in and outside of M&E, on the West or East Coasts. I’m on the road again, ready to get up on the next stage and show the world what I’ve got.

✨ Reflecting on Change ✨ This summer I faced an unexpected layoff. While it was tough, it’s been an eye-opening opportunity to pause and rethink my career path. I’ve realized that a layoff isn’t the end but rather a chance for growth. Here are some key benefits I’ve experienced: Time for Reflection: Gained the chance to reassess my career goals and values. I think it is essential to have a moment when you have time to stop and think if this industry is for you. It is easy to get caught up in tasks and career and sometimes an emergency stop is a must. Skill Development: Focused on learning new skills that can enhance my professional toolkit. It was helpful seeing fellow marketers posting about new updates, tools, features as now I had time to dive in a tool tutorial for hours! Creative Break: So much opportunities to get back to the old hobbies. Lets be honest, full time job and occasional commute takes the biggest chunk of a day after which having passion for hobbies is not easy. Suddenly my interest in creating visual effects opened a whole new world to me (not to mention how good it is to realize yourself in something other than direct career). This journey has been rewarding—I’ve gotten to know myself better, recharged my passion, and I feel more prepared than ever for my next role. Remember, it’s okay to take a step back. Yesterday was an all too familiar feeling at Paramount. My position was thankfully spared, but sadly I cannot say the same for 60% of my TA colleagues. #layoffs never get any easier but this time... this time was different. There is no more "trimming the fat" - I cannot overstate this enough, everyone impacted was INCREDIBLE. I saw a comment on a colleague's posts saying this is like finding out LeBron's contract is up and he's a free agent. I'm not speaking in hyperbole when I say this is an opportunity for you to swoop up Olympian-level talent. Most of my teammates are too humble to brag about themselves, so allow me to do it for them. Here are some of the things you should know that you likely won't find on their resumes: ⭐ In the height of the pandemic, when the world had shut down and we weren't hiring, my teammates offered to become certified contact tracers to help support our inundated production partners. ⭐ During the ViacomCBS merger, they led their teams through ambiguity, leadership changes, new system/process implementations, and multiple reorgs all while not knowing whether or not their positions would be safe. ⭐ During the "Great Resignation" my teammates took on the work of 2-3 people, never letting their partners see them sweat or allow things to fall through the cracks. ⭐ During the "Great Reshuffling" my teammates took on additional projects outside their job scopes while managing their current workload all with a positive attitude. And that's just some of what they did for Paramount. Now let me tell you what they did for me. - They mentored and advised me as I navigated my career. - They advocated for me in rooms I was never in. - They were a shoulder for me to cry on when I was at my lowest. - They picked up the phone whenever I had questions or wanted to bounce ideas off them. - They created a safe space for me to find myself and become my true, authentic self. - They treated me as an equal and gave me a seat at the table. They were my friends, role models, strategic partners, advocates, and after-work drink besties. We've been in the trenches together and have weathered many storms. They are battle-tested, adaptable, resourceful, proactive, collaborative, and emotionally intelligent. You would be SO lucky to have them on your team. I see many of my friends and former Macy's coworkers have been part of the recently announced cuts by the company. This includes numerous people from MCCS, some of whom have been a part of the Macy's family since it was Federated Department Stores. My life changed 30-days ago when I ended my contract with Travis Barker’s clothing brand Famous Stars & Straps that I relaunched in ‘23. Over the last month I made my first #resume ever and have already revised it no less than a 1,000 times. Please reread that last sentence. I am forty three years old and have just made my first resume. While my lessons learned and my vast experiences at REBEL8, the #brand I started when I was twenty-two with a $500 investment, are valuable and absolutely applicable to new opportunities, I am still starting over. It’s easy to look at a resume with tenure and titles at Vans, a VF Company, Nike, or adidas and have a much better picture of the stage this person is at in their respective career. Additionally, the corporate experience holds weight. Something I don’t have yet. For me, if a #recruiter or someone in a #hiring position doesn’t know REBEL8, I’m pretty much out of luck. If I have to explain the REBEL8 brand, I’ve already lost. And I understand. A good friend of mine gave me some sound advice. He said you can’t position yourself as the guy that can do everything. Instead, focus on one area of business you are passionate about, get your foot in the door, and once inside, show them what you’re made of. So that is exactly what I’m attempting to do. A ton of job applications later, I’m still excited. But I’m also nervous. I’m uncomfortable. I’m scared. But more so, I’m ready. I know the Universe has my back. And I know my preparation will meet my next opportunity.

My father worked 1 job for 40 years. It's impressive, but I was not inspired to follow in his footsteps. In this day in age. (I’m very proud he kept a roof over our heads) This is why stories like Nike's new CEO, Elliott Hill, don't move me. Their reality: Loyalty was rewarded with promotions & increases They could work ONE job and make ends meet Tenured employees were valued for their knowledge Record-breaking profits were shared with employees The current reality: Loyalty is rewarded with more work: fewer raises and promotions Many have to work 2+ jobs to make ends meet Tenured employees are replaced with lower-cost labor Record-breaking profits are the prelude to mass layoffs It's clear that blue-collar values (staying at one job) don't translate well to white-collar jobs. The other reality: Let's sprinkle in the gauntlet that people of color face in the workplace and it makes it really hard to stay at one job. Source: 38 years experience as a ⚫️woman. Here's what I want you to take from this: Read these inspiring stories but don't internalize the inspiration. It's an extreme exception. Staying at one job these days can cost you everything: upskilling, below-market salaries. Continue job hopping AKA "Career Exploring." Up-level your skills, increase your income, build your personal brand, and work your side business.
