I went away for a week having implemented a completely new management systems for my team. I got back to find that nothing had burned down, they had followed my team management processes exactly the way I had hoped they would, continued with the work plan they had created for themselves at the start of the week and come up with a creative solution to an inter-departmental challenge that arose whilst I was away. I had full faith in my team they would be able to manage. I empowered them to make these decisions on their own and as a result they all made the best decisions they could for the benefit of the team. Trusting your team and treating them like the professionals they are will allow you to be able to leave work and know that everything is being handled. For those who know me, I like to make football analogies, but this is my one and only rugby analogy. It's called trusting your inside man. For those that know rugby, there are predominately two ways to defend. Man to man and drift defence. Man to man is simple. You are responsible for your opposite man. Drift is a little bit more nuanced. Drift defence is great because it allows you to always have an overlap. When the fly half says drift, everyone shifts over to the next man in the line. What this does mean though is that you have to trust your inside man to make the tackle; you are left completely exposed otherwise. Most people want to do good work — let them. - Ben Meer Ice sweeping is a technique used in the Olympic sport of curling to reduce friction between a stone and the ice. Explanation * Curling is a team sport where players slide granite stones down a sheet of ice towards a target. * The sweeping motion creates friction that melts the ice, allowing the stone to travel farther and curl less. * Sweeping can help a stone travel up to 15 feet farther. * Teams may sweep with one or two players, depending on their strategy. How it works * The ice surface is sprinkled with water droplets that freeze into bumps, called "pebbled ice". * The bumps help the stone grip the ice and make curling more consistent. * The bottom of the stone is concave, so only the outside ring is in contact with the ice, which minimizes friction. When it's used * Sweeping is used to control the curl of the stone. * Sweeping can be used to affect the direction of the stone. * * * Sweeping can be used to reduce the amount of curl in a stone.

You're NOT an employee! You're a team PLAYER. Business is a professional sport (just like professional sports is a business...a huge business). Do you think Messi tells his friends he's an employee at Barcelona? Just like Messi, every person should think of themselves as a team player with a skill that is instrumental for their team to win. Sometimes you're a striker, playmaker, goalkeeper, defense, whatever it is...your role is an instrumental part of your team winning the game. If people stop thinking of themselves as employees and start thinking of themselves as players in a professional team, everything changes. Even if they think their team is a crappy one..that's how all the football stars started, in crappy teams. But they played their best game, and trained as hard as they can, and that's how they made it to the best teams. How you work and how you think of work is a reflection on yourself, not on the company or the team you're playing for. It all starts with your state of mind. What do you think?
