Efforts to create a DEIB culture in higher education are crucial for improving education. The problem is too many rely on equality principles that raise questions about “merit” instead of relying on Equity principles. Consider this statement: “Building a faculty and staff who are reflective of the students and communities we serve is integral to our commitment to put diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) and anti-racism at the heart of our work.” Can you see why this laudable effort to create equality will only cause a backlash? What would an equity statement look like?

“Blanken disagrees with the DEIA policy’s premise that racism is embedded in institutions, including California’s community colleges, or in disciplines such as chemistry, math and physics. He argues that these fields should be taught in a way that is race- and gender-neutral.
