Leadership from PEI - a province dear to me in so many ways. Friends, family all live there. What I take from this is a more holistic approach that really thinks through a planned approach to adaptation and resilience. Recommendations that include a Framework, not just recommendations of various options, as described in the Introduction: " [The Framework] establishes a system in which options for coastal zone management and adaptation strategies are ranked according to priorities. The framework emphasizes proactive and preventative measures to prevent further actions that increase the province’s coastal vulnerability. The framework also addresses current challenges while promoting sustainable new development opportunities and bolstering coastal ecosystem resilience."

It serves as the foundation for the highly successful Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), so changes to the BMP will also show up in the Tree Risk Assessment Manual and TRAQ class. In this revision is a greater differentiation among Tree Risk Assessors (TRA), tree inspectors and working arborists; clarification of TRA responsibilities; more information on occupancy rates and the likelihood of impact; changes to the weather categories; and inter-rater reliability. So proud of this whole team and the incredible work they do. I’m just fit to burst. The FRC is so important because it helps us understand site specific flood risk at any scale - we can tweak what we know at any level and still look at the big picture without sacrificing the quality or integrity of the assessment. This scalable framework is critical for confident decision making and that’s why we developed it. We didn’t like having black boxes we couldn’t “break” and fully understand. But here we have something so powerful, that we can use it to compare different alternatives over time, and also understand key thresholds and timing for when we want to be taking action on risk. This phasing of action can be extremely supportive in implementation planning, where we understand what we should be doing when, calibrating with real data and based on how projections may change over time, and help people not feel so overwhelmed by the magnitude of challenges they’re facing.

Very proud to announce the release of a new report to advance sustainable stormwater management - the Socioeconomic Value of Urban Stormwater Capture. The report is the result of a partnership with an academic research team at Ceto Consulting. Much thanks to their team, CASQA’s Joseph Draper, Jim Rasmus, the Stormwater Capture and Use Subcommittee, and CASQA’s engaged membership for contributing to this important work. The report uses case studies from diverse geographic regions in California to monetize the socioeconomic value of several benefits - beyond flood control and augmented water supply. Key Takeaways: - The annual dollar value of the benefits estimated in this report alone exceeded the total cost of the project. In other words, all of these projects have a one-year payoff. - The non-market value of the socioeconomic benefits of urban stormwater capture projects can be maximized by siting these projects in areas of highest need. A project which creates urban green space in a high-need area will maximize benefits to the community. #casqa
