Binnies approach to improving WINEP delivery, part 2️⃣ & 3️⃣ / 5️⃣ The Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) is a set of actions that the Environment Agency has asked all 20 water companies operating in England to complete in order to contribute towards meeting their environmental obligations. Our modelling and environmental teams are currently working together to deliver more than £2 million in WINEP OPEX and UPM programmes for Thames Water. 2. Blue-Green Infrastructure RSK Group's expertise in bioengineering, habitat enhancement, and catchment-based solutions enables us to incorporate green infrastructure strategies throughout the project life cycle. Binnies' engineering teams explore optimal catchment-wide solutions, promoting biodiversity and delivering benefits to various stakeholders. 3. Breweries that are expanding can face a number of issues, one of them being their wastewater treatment plans. Craft brews are growing in popularity and expanding isn't as easy as putting up a new building and beer fermentation tanks, expansions also need to consider the additional high-strength waste they will produce. An interesting article on water treatment for the wine industry. - Wineries use lot of water in their various processes. - The California State Water Board instituted wastewater discharge requirements in 2021 to address land discharge of wastewater. - Tiered requirements, larger wineries more stringently regulated. - Notice of Intent in 2024 & compliance in 5 years. - CA is also expected to institute direct potable reuse regulations in the near future. Blend treated wastewater with existing potable sources for drinking and other potable uses. - The wine industry has strong expertise with reverse osmosis (RO). - Multistage process: Biomembrane - Ion Exhange Softening - Low Efficiency RO - High Efficiency RO (HERO). - HERO treats the concentrate from the Low Efficiency RO to recover more potable water. - Goal: 97% recovery. - Treated water meets DPR requirements and will be used to offset groundwater use. - Concentrate is managed by a wastewater utility. - Lab testing successful. - Demonstration planned. Regeneration in practice! 🚜 Soil #carbondioxideremoval represents the largest #sequestration opportunity at the lowest cost. According to Professor Pete Smith of University of Aberdeen, IPCC Convening Lead Author on Land Use, Ag and Forestry, soil CDR “is the only negative emissions technology which appears to have the potential to be net negative in terms of cost.” 🌲As a result, demand > supply. According to The Nature Conservancy, “Under current conditions, a soil carbon project without a buyer will be hard to find.” 📏Key obstacles to scaling include MRV (measurement, reporting and verification) …see YardStick as a solution and assurance of the nutrient quality of regenerative agriculture (see Edacious, PBC’s work in this realm). 🍞Credit to King Arthur Baking Company for taking the leap to commercializing regenerative wheat flour.
