How does smoking cause lung cancer? Good question to ask during Lung Cancer Awareness Month. According to a new study that analyzed 12,000 tumor samples, tobacco smoking is linked to something called "stop-gain mutations" (SGMs) that interfere with the formation of tumor suppressor genes, which help keep abnormal cells in check. These harmful protein-truncating mutations appear to contribute to the development of cancer and its increasing complexity over time.
