🧠🤖 AI can now read minds without implants, just a cap! #MindReadingAI Scientists have developed a non-invasive #AI, DeWave, that converts brainwaves into text. This technology could aid those who cannot speak & assist in controlling machines like bionic arms. Here's the gist of it: ⮞ Developed by the University of Technology Sydney. ⮞ DeWave requires only a cap worn by the user. ⮞ Current accuracy is 40%, with an aim to reach 90%. ⮞ It's more effective with verbs than nouns. ⮞ Similar research at the UT is underway, with AI decoding thoughts from brain scans. Are Augmented Humans the Future of Technology? How trusted can #technology be after humans have been augmented with it? With the news that the first patient with the #Neuralink implant has recovered from the operation, where will the technology lead us? 🤖 AI Integration The implant, known as a brain-computer interface (BCI), allows for thoughts to be transferred to external devices. In Elon Musk’s view, it’s the start of the journey to merging humans with #AI. Human trials are nothing new in terms of technological advancement and #BCIs. In academia, researchers have been using BCIs in animals and people for decades. The main difference is that Musk’s version is completely wireless and also features over 1,000 electrodes, each thinner than a human hair. 🔍 Lack of Transparency According to WIRED, the #ethics around Neuralink are a bit hazy. It has been reported that their BCIs may have caused problems in monkeys, but they are under no obligation to disclose details about human or animal testing. With something as deeply personal as the #brain, surely it’s necessary to be transparent when BCI technology is being deployed? A 2022 survey from Pew Research Center found that 56% of people believe widespread use of brain chips to improve cognitive function would be a bad idea for society. Considering Neuralink’s progress has mostly been relayed through social media, and it’s been sparse, lack of transparency hasn’t made for a trusting start. ⚠️ AI Issues Last week, #ChatGPT went berserk and gave a series of nonsensical answers to various questions posed to it. One user reported a mixture of English and Spanish in a response that waffled on and went seemingly nowhere. Another user was given the phrase “Happy listening!” and a quaver musical note emoji 24 times, before spouting gibberish. While #OpenAI identified the issue and remedied the problem, no explanation was given at the time. The dangers with AI integration and BCIs is that there will always be unforeseen consequences. No technology is ever perfect, and bugs can persist. The question would be how this would affect humans. 🧠 The Future of BCIs Neuralink’s first successful patient has shown they can move a mouse around a screen. While the BCI is implanted into the region of the brain that controls the intention to move, wider applications will require multiple implants or a larger, more deeply rooted BCI. The eventual aim is to potentially treat various issues and conditions like #obesity, autism, depression and schizophrenia, but we’re a long way off this. Perhaps the Penfield Mood Organ from Philip K Dick isn’t as far off as it first seemed. What do you think the future of BCIs will look like?
