It finds that while biochar enhances mechanical strength and adsorption, it also increases environmental impacts. If you're worried about pollutants getting into the environment from wastewater, you might be glad to know that doctoral student Pierre Oesterle has come up with a way to deal with it. Rather than using unsustainable adsorbents like activated carbon that has to be regenerated at high temperatures, Oesterle has found that activated biochars from wood and agricultural industries can be used instead. These can be regenerated using hydrothermal treatment at lower temperatures, and the remaining materials might even be more effective in removing pollutants afterwards! #wastewatermanagement #wastewatertreatment

Research developed iron-modified, nitrogen-rich #biochar (Fen-BDBC) via a green molten salt method, achieving 100% nonradical degradation of Bisphenol A using the Fe0.1-BDBC/peroxymonosulfate system. Exciting news! Our collaborative effort has been published! 🎉 In this study, we introduce an innovative wastewater treatment approach for removing organic pollutants and recovering nitrogen for use as a plant nutrient. It thus reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers and promotes a more circular cycle of resources. The treatment setup, now patented as P-09012, achieved a remarkable 90% removal of organic pollutants, while the recovery of nitrogen, in the form of struvite, reached a 99% efficiency. Our analysis found no significant (eco)toxicological risks in the treated sample, which confirms the safety of the recovered material as fertilizer, and highlights the potential of the treatment as a more circular waste management strategy. This reduces the environmental footprint of wastewater treatment and helps protect ecosystems. 💡 𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭-𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞: Compared to chemical and physical treatment methods, biological treatment often requires lower operational and maintenance costs. The use of naturally occurring microorganisms reduces the need for expensive chemical reagents and energy-intensive processes. 🌍 𝟑. 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: Many biological treatment systems, such as anaerobic digesters, can generate energy in the form of biogas. This renewable energy source can be used to power the treatment facility or other applications, enhancing overall energy efficiency. 🌱 𝟒.
