Can plastics be both sustainable and beautiful? Absolutely 💯 - when we reduce our reliance on fossil feedstock and innovate responsibly. Our collaboration with designer Nienke Hoogvliet showcases how biobased, circular solutions can harmoniously coexist with beauty. 🌟✨ This collaboration has revealed that while science helps us craft solutions, artistic interpretations encourage us to question the very problems we face. After all, how can Releaf be a Relief to our environmental problems 🌎 if we don’t fully understand the challenges? Come walk through our tunnel of discovery from October 19-27 at Microlab, Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week (yes, it's happening tomorrow!), where we’ll showcase how we blend innovative design with artistic insight to create beautiful, impactful solutions. See you at the Dutch Design Week💚, Releaf, made by Avantium #releaf #PlantBasedInnovation #BiobasedMaterials #SustainableFuture #CircularEconomy #bioplastic #GreenTechnology #DutchDesignWeek #PEF #EcoInnovation #RenewableResources #PlasticRevolution #SustainableSolutions #CleanTech #InnovativeMaterials #FutureOfPlastics #avantium #recyclablematerials #plantbased #greenchemistry #ddw #dutchdesignweek #ddw24 #designforchange

As I travelled back from the launch of RENEW Centre for Regenerative Design and Engineering for a Net Positive World, I was struck by the overlap between what Michael Braungart and William McDonough set out in their 2002 book 'Cradle to Cradle', and what was being discussed at the RENEW research centre. Both advocate for not just 'doing less harm', but 'doing more good'. They target designs that are designed with nature, in ways that leave no trace when we have finished with them. They use both the biosphere and technosphere to engineer with. And they both aspire to create a world where social and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. Congratulations to Juliana Calabria-Holley and the team at RENEW for launching this manifesto and research centre. At The Institution of Structural Engineers one of our sustainability focus areas is #RegenerativeDesign, and so I look forward to being able to work with you to help push our industry in a positive direction! If you haven't yet read RENEW's research manifesto, check it out here: https://lnkd.in/d4xmFJDC If you haven't read Cradle to Cradle, get a copy for less than the price of a coffee here: https://lnkd.in/dn5YmrsB Both fill me with hope, joy and optimism. #regenerativedesign #netzero #sustainability #climatecrisis #biodiversitycrisis
🎬 And it is live! If you didn’t catch your physical copy, check out the online version of our Manifesto for Regenerative Design and Engineering. Read about the RENEW principles that will be shaping the future of our centre, and be inspired by our RENEW imaginarium. It has been quite a journey and we are more than happy to share the result of our efforts. Our manifesto is also regenerative in nature! So this is version one 📕We will RENEW it as needed. 📣Please feel free to share and spread the word! 📣 If you are interested in our work and would like to collaborate or chat, drop us a DM or email the centre directors. 🌱 LAUNCH: The Regenerative Design Manifesto 🌍 Today, we are proud to unveil The Regenerative Design Manifesto – a transformative vision for design as a force to heal and regenerate. This manifesto introduces five guiding principles that challenge us to design not just for humans but with nature and ethics at the forefront. Curated by Henrik Lübker, CEO of Design denmark and Lotte Nystrup Lund, Founder of Futurista.dk, in collaboration, and supported by The Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond), this manifesto is the result of a co-creation journey involving contributions from over 100 designers representing diverse design disciplines, and countries. It was developed through the international design event Design Matters DK 2024 in Copenhagen and enriched by insights from Design denmark’s members, and network. 💡 The five principles call for a profound shift toward inclusive, ecological, and ethical approaches to design – crucial for addressing the challenges of our time and building a thriving, regenerative future. 📄 Read and share the manifesto today: see below or here: https://lnkd.in/decQC72e 🔛 This is more than a manifesto – it’s a shared commitment and an invitation to transform how we design for a multispecies world. Let’s work together to make regenerative design the new standard. 💬 What does regenerative design mean to you? Share your thoughts and join the conversation in the comments. #RegenerativeDesign #DesignManifesto #DesignMatters2024 #DesignDenmark #Futuristadk #StatensKunstfond #Morethanhumandesign #Regeneration #FutureDesign #Biodiversity

At the Design Council's Design for Planet Festival last week, Sophie Thomas’ closing keynote emphasised the urgent need for design to drive sustainability. With the key message that waste is a design flaw, Sophie’s insights included: 🔄 Today’s economy is only 7.2% circular, with over 100 billion tons of resources extracted annually. Six out of nine planetary boundaries are already exceeded. 📉 80% of a product’s environmental impact is set at concept stage. Designers have immense power to choose materials, reduce waste, and build products meant to last. 🌐 High-demand materials, from gallium in electronics to rare metals for renewables, are at risk. Our design choices must account for these resource limits and prioritise longevity. 💡 Recycling alone won’t solve our waste problem. We need to design for reuse, work across disciplines, and adopt policies like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), where designers consider a product’s full lifecycle. Thank you Design Council for organising such a rich and energising event. 📽️ Watch Sophie’s keynote speech in full here - https://lnkd.in/egdTgp8v. 📰 Read Pete Swift’s in-depth summary of the Festival here - https://lnkd.in/e8Tec-ta. A Little Late, but overjoyed! Late on Friday night, my team and I were honored with the prize for Outstanding Digital Submission at the Biodesign Challenge 2024, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Seeing our project showcased on such a prestigious global platform was a humbling experience, reflecting the immense effort we poured into it over the past four months. Our project, titled "Mirage: Eco Solutions from Marble Remnants," explores innovative ways to utilize marble slurry—an industrial waste product—to create sustainable solutions for the local community, including thermal protection. This project's win is a testament to the collective hard work and dedication of so many individuals. First and foremost, I extend my deepest gratitude to our mentor, Mudita Pasari. Your guidance was invaluable, constantly pushing us to think creatively and improve continuously. This achievement would not have been possible without your support and insights. Special thanks to Vatsal Agrawal for your steadfast guidance throughout the project, and Souvik M., who was our voice and advocate, making our projects reach greater heights. The Design Village for providing a platform and community through which this was possible. Most importantly, I want to celebrate my incredible teammates; Raghav Modi Divyansh Jain and Prakriti. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a talented and passionate team. The journey was filled with invaluable learning experiences, and I cherish every moment we spent working together. Here's to many more milestones and innovations ahead! 🌿 Sharing a glimpse of the moment: #BiodesignChallenge #Teamwork #Innovation #Sustainability #Collaboration #CommunityImpact #DreamDoing #MarbleSlurry #Kishangarh #EcoSolutions #GreenDesign #CircularEconomy #WasteToWealth #DesignInnovation #FutureOfDesign #CreativeSolutions #SustainableLiving #BioDesign #EnvironmentalImpact #LocalCommunity #ClimateAction #DesignForChange #InnovationInDesign #Mentorship #Gratitude
