The projects selected are on-going initiatives that leverage high-quality #referencegenomes to boost biodiversity #conservation or to investigate how sustainably managed species contribute to our economy and health. Funding will bring genomes to Earth BioGenome Project (EBP) standards and generate essential genomic data. We (#Phycology Research Group @GhentUniversity) are happy to contribute with a case study to the @BioGenEurope directed "Enhancing Biodiversity Genomics Applications" program. We are aiming to establish reference genomes for Porphyra linearis and Porphyra dioica to support ongoing research. This effort will improve to understand underlying fundamental processes in red macroalgal evolution, adaptation and specifically observed life cycle variations. Besides advancing fundamental knowledge in this ancient lineage of red algae, the added genomic data can help to overcome hurdles in European Porphyra valorisation. 🌊 Marine ecosystems are facing growing threats from environmental stressors. To understand their impact, this study analyzed liquid biopsies from mussels in a national park using multiple biological techniques. 🧬🔬 Researchers looked at genetic, protein, and microbial profiles to see how these stressors affect the mussels and their environment. Today is #BiodiversityDay2024! 🌿 An important day, as time is running out. An appalling one in four species on the planet are currently threatened with extinction, putting livelihoods, food supplies, and essential water and nutrient cycles at risk. Biodiversity Genomics Europe (#BGE) is scaling up the use of genomics to enhance understanding of biodiversity and guide interventions to address the #BiodiversityCrisis. 🧬 We are a joint effort of two major genomics communities: iBOL Europe, which focuses on DNA-barcoding, and ERGA - European Reference Genome Atlas, which focuses on genome sequencing.
