We are excited to share our latest preprint: ‘GenomeFISH: genome-based fluorescence in situ hybridisation for strain-level visualisation of microbial communities’ 🔬 This study introduces GenomeFISH—an innovative, genome-based fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) technique that couples high-throughput single cell genomics with whole-genome hybridisation. This powerful method enables strain-level visualisation of microbial communities, offering unparalleled insights into microbial ecology. By facilitating the characterisation of microbial communities at a resolution that was previously unattainable with traditional FISH methods, we hope GenomeFISH will become the new gold standard in the visualisation of complex microbial ecosystems. We (#Phycology Research Group @GhentUniversity) are happy to contribute with a case study to the @BioGenEurope directed "Enhancing Biodiversity Genomics Applications" program. We are aiming to establish reference genomes for Porphyra linearis and Porphyra dioica to support ongoing research. This effort will improve to understand underlying fundamental processes in red macroalgal evolution, adaptation and specifically observed life cycle variations. Besides advancing fundamental knowledge in this ancient lineage of red algae, the added genomic data can help to overcome hurdles in European Porphyra valorisation. A recent study by Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (ICMAN-CSIC), Puerto Real, Spain on the Atlantic croaker's invasion history in Europe marks a significant contribution to understanding non-native fish species' impact on southwestern European waters. Bioer's GeneExplorer Thermal Cycler with its advanced technology facilitated the precise DNA amplification necessary for molecular identification, proving its effectiveness in genetic research. Specifically, GeneExplorer was used for the PCR process, which amplified fragments of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) for molecular identification of the Atlantic croaker. The PCR cycles conducted on the Bioer GeneExplorer thermal cycler ensured precise and accurate DNA amplification necessary for the genetic analysis reported in the study. 🧩 Today is National Puzzle Day 🧩 At the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics we are trying to put together the world's largest puzzle- a complete picture of Earth's biodiversity using DNA-based systems for species identification. Our Barcode of Life initiative represents an ambitious effort to develop an identification system for eukaryotic life based on the analysis of sequence diversity in short, standardized gene regions. Revisit the pivotal paper by Hebert et al.
