Denmark Launches World’s First National Biochar Strategy to Capture Carbon Denmark has become the first country to introduce a national strategy focused on using biochar to capture carbon in agriculture. The plan aims to sequester up to 3.4 million tCO2e annually by 2035, supporting Denmark’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2045. Surprising new JRC report. Methane also contributes to ground-level ozone that, although protecting us from harmful ultraviolet rays when in the upper atmosphere, if released at ground level can be very harmful because it reacts aggressively with lung tissue causing respiratory illnesses in humans and animals as well as damaging crops and natural vegetation. Roughly 1 million people dying prematurely every year because of exposure to tropospheric ozone, 24 000 in the EU.

How to reduce Greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater plants? 🌱 Through different development projects, we have come a long way in understanding emissions and reduction potentials at wastewater plants. It is important to spread the understanding of known solutions and possibilities and to proceed with significant development areas that will strengthen knowledge, solution concepts and implementation both in Denmark and on export markets. Especially to reach the goal of climate neutrality in 2030. Following the workshop in November we are proceeding with the PATH TO ZER0 track. 🌱 In our continued effort to address climate change and advance towards NetZero goals, my recent publication in ACS Omega highlights the innovative use of biochar in climate mitigation. 🌍 🔍 Our study, titled "Novel Approach to Photocatalytic Removal of Linezolid by Advanced Nano-Biochar/Bismuth Oxychloride Hybrid," demonstrates the potential of a nanohybrid material composed of Corchorus olitorius-derived biochar and bismuth oxychloride for advanced wastewater treatment. The IPCC notes that there is no longer an emissions budget scenario left that allows the possibility of staying on a 1.5-2C pathway without greenhouse gas emissions reduction paired with CDR. Biochar is one of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change-endorsed CDR technologies. A recent report by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) and the US Biochar Initiative (USBI) illustrates the soaring success of the global biochar market, which hit a market value milestone of $600 million in 2023, demonstrating a remarkable 91% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) production growth rate from 2021. This growth is a testament to biochar’s agronomic and climate change mitigation and adaptation co-benefits.

I remember learning about Methane (CH4) for the first time in the 2nd grade. Back then it was only about Cow Farts 💨 (it's actually more so the burps) but there is so much more to the methane problem than that. We also delve into the critical issue of natural methane emissions and the net balance of methane production and consumption, emphasizing the role of soil methanotrophic microorganisms (mems) and the impact of intensive agriculture. 🌍 A recent review highlights the complex link between carbon and nitrogen management in major decarbonization strategies. For example, using ammonia-based fuels for marine shipping could cut CO2 emissions but could require a massive increase in nitrogen production, potentially worsening nutrient pollution and eutrophication. Biofuels could lower emissions but also need significant nitrogen inputs that end up straining ecosystems. Life cycle thinking is critical. https://lnkd.in/g7n5PrE7 The report highlights that to make decarbonization sustainable, we need carbon-nitrogen co-benefits. Reducing synthetic nitrogen fertilizer use could reduce both CO2 and nitrogen pollution.
