Several of our #RealPorkTrust faculty members and students met August 28 and 29 to celebrate the progress made in Year One and set goals for Year Two alongside our knowledgeable advisory board members. We covered the three main areas which encompass our RPTC strategy: 👨🔬 Research - How have our listening sessions and surveys with consumers over the past year helped us understand trust in pork and pork production? And what #peerreviewed scientific topics should we cover to help consumers make informed choices about the food they eat? 📱Communication - What are practical, strategic steps we can use to build upon the applied communication framework we built in the last year to reach those who want more pork & pork production information? 📚 After listening to producers about their training needs and training students in science communication, what are our next steps for taking #sciencecommunication training to the next level for students, pork producers, and allied industry partners? Click below to read a recap of the meeting and see what we're excited about in the year ahead in our latest news update. Microplastics is everywhere around us: attend the ITRC training to learn the latest on the topic
ITRC's Microplastics Training will be held live on Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 1:00-3:15PM EST. Our featured panelists will include: Alia Enright, Yasemin Kunukcu, Ph.D, P.E, Alex MacDonald, Nizzana Bathersfield, Todd Miller, Usha Vedagiri, Dicle Yardimci, Ph.D., and Valerie Hanley. The online ITRC Guidance Document (available in February 2023) is geared toward an audience with reasonable level of scientific understanding, but not microplastic-specific knowledge. The guidance provides a user with information on microplastics and the state of the applied science without having to go to the scientific literature. The target audience for the guidance and this training course includes state regulators and environmental consultants, as well as community and tribal stakeholders. "My work matters, and that motivates me. Whatever I work on in the fellowship, even if the bill dies, the concept can and probably will come back if it had a lot of traction. It means that people care. It makes an impact on their lives, which feels great." Check out this inspiring interview with 2024 S&T Policy Fellow Ellia La, PhD, in National Conference of State Legislatures.
NCSL talks with Ellia La, an Ohio State-trained food scientist who works in the California Legislature as part of a fellowship with the California Council on Science and Technology, the nation’s longest-running state science policy fellowship program. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3UetDQd

Today's take home message from the EACCME – UEMS Conference on CME-CPD: To preserve the integrity of science in CME, we must constantly be aware of and avoid bias. It's more than just disclosing the faculty's conflict of interest. So how do we go about it? By implementing diverse and inclusive selection of topics and faculty members. It's also essential to seek feedback from both the learners and the faculty (although it's not always easy to get that feedback - nobody loves filling out surveys).

CEO SoScience, Author, Expert on Responsible Research and Innovation, Echoing Green Fellow, Ashoka Fellow
It is so difficult to deal with societal impacts of a research project when you’re a scientist. How to talk with all the stakeholders ? How to even find them ? What timescale is relevant ? However, this is now asked on a regular basis by funding programs, such as Horizon Europe. In a research and innovation landscape that is going through massive changes, training is paramount. That is why we've launched a training on societal impact for research and innovation projects. This training is a necessary first step for universities and research performing organizations that want to improve their understanding of social and environmental impact in research and innovation settings. If you are a university: - with an ambition to foster research and innovation with positive societal impacts - looking to engage your scientists more closely with civil society - looking to stay up to date with these new requirements Your support staff and researchers should be taking this course ! Our next training session start end of February 2024.
