So MassBio recently published a new Industry Snapshot, and it's got all kinds of good stuff in there. A few points of interest for me from the report: ▶ Even after the industry-wide layoffs in 2023, the total number of life science jobs in Massachusetts still increased relative to 2022. As a point of reference, that was not the case for California. ▶ About 45% of VC funding in Q1 and Q2 of 2024 went to companies outside of Cambridge and Boston. Among these lesser-known biohubs are Waltham, Watertown, and Framingham. ▶ Total R&D and biomanufacturing square footage in Massachusetts doubled between 2019 and 2024, from 30 million to 60 million square feet These reports from MassBio really should have more LinkedIn presence. Had an amazing time at Bisnow Mid-Atlantic Life Sciences & Biotech Summit. Each of the panelists provided valuable insights as to the currrent state of the life sciences space as it relates to our regions’ talent pool (among the largest in the country). I particularly enjoyed the discussion around the evolution of this ecosystem to build and sustain a growth trajectory to become an internationally recognized hub to attract and retain top talent in this field. We are fostering some of the brightest minds coming out of the countries top educational institutions located right in our backyard and it’s our job to properly align them with local companies that can provide them a fruitful and vibrant work/life balance in order to keep them here. My buddy Justin Gore with JLL did a fantastic job moderating a panel of experts in the brokerage and design field. It was fascinating to hear about pros and cons on the construction of brand new space vs. existing asset conversions.
