Please catch this presentation. The Biochar Atlas is an online, interactive tool from the USDA-Agricultural Research Service. The tool provides guidance to farmers, gardeners, and other end-users on the potential benefits of biochar. It includes decision support tools to select biochar types and amendment rates for specific crops based on soil characteristics identified by the user. Many thanks to Kristin Trippe and the USDA-ARS for the having the vision to compile this impressive and important work.
Please join the Minnesota Biochar Initiative (MNBI) for our December CharTalk. Kristin Trippe, USDA-ARS, will present her innovative Biochar Atlas, an up-and-coming initiative to help make informed decisions about biochar use. CharTalk is a monthly webinar series by MNBI on various biochar topics to broaden our understanding of the field. Please get in touch if you have a topic you would like to share. The webinar is this Friday, December 20, at noon Central Time.

MST exhibited at the January 2025 SIMB meeting for Natural Product Discovery and Development in the Genomic Era in San Diego. This was an opportunity to promote our most recent BioAustralis Fine Chemicals catalogue release which focused on microbial pesticides for agrochemical research including first-to-market antifungals, anti-insectans, plant growth regulators and nematicides (https://lnkd.in/gs7BidsM). The calibre of presentations and posters was exceptional and showcased the state of research into natural product discovery in the USA and globally. Of particular interest were the banquet speech by Dr. Barry O’Keefe of the National Cancer Institute, who gave a compelling history of natural products and their semisynthetic derivatives for new anti-tumour candidates, Prof. Roger Linington, Simon Fraser University, Canada, presenting his snap structure elucidation and dereplication direct from C13-NMR and Dr. Serina Robinson, Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, who spoke on the use of microbes for finding flourinase enzymes to tackle PFAS contamination.

Q) In what year was Penicillin discovered? A) 1928. Penicillin is now the most widely used antibiotic in the modern world. It was first found in 1928 by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming. While it was discovered in 1928, it was not used to treat people until 1942. This is because its uses were not known when it was first discovered, and Fleming and other scientists had to test it for both its uses and its safety. Penicillin remains one of the biggest discoveries in science, ever. It revolutionized antibiotics and has helped save countless lives in the nearly 100 years since its discovery. #DYK #FYI #Penicillin #AlexanderFleming #Scotland #ToyeenB #TBW xo VISIT: https://lnkd.in/fh4-Rux

“Every human who has medical intervention has benefited from horseshoe crabs,” said Glenn Gauvry, president of a horseshoe crab–focused nonprofit called the Ecological Research and Development Group. To test for bacterial toxins in injected drugs, most drugmakers use an assay whose ingredients are harvested from horseshoe crab blood. New USP Chapter released in November make it much easier to use animal-free alternatives for products sold in the US. 📄 Read the article to learn how the drug industry is phasing out the use of horseshoe crab blood : https://lnkd.in/dtYEERzX
