Program Description “Instead of asking what are people‘s roots, we ought to think about what are their routes, the different points by which they have come to be now; they are, in a sense, the sum of those differences.” (Hall, Stuart, 1999) In this workshop, we will delve into the intricate pathways that shape who we are in the present moment. Drawing from Stuart Hall's (1999) insightful perspective, we will explore not just our roots, but the diverse routes that have led us here, acknowledging that our identities are the sum of these multifaceted journeys. Participants are invited to engage in an interactive workshop aimed at defining and understanding intergenerational trauma and resilience. Through didactic presentation, self-reflection, and exploration, we will unravel the layers of our migration stories, recognizing how they intersect with therapeutic dynamics and are clinically applied. https://lnkd.in/gsKJA9ct

FREE TO DOWNLOAD TILL THURSDAY... The World is Our Playground series was created to provide a means for people to be made aware at a young age of the existence in this world of different cultures, people, beliefs, ways of life, and languages. It is through this powerful knowledge that people get to be a receptive and inclusive society, and further use this familiarity as a tool to derive the best outcome in every situation – whether it be at home, in school, at work, in the community, or during travels. The beauty in diversity, then shines through, eradicating racism and bullying. The series has already brought thousands of children to Vietnam, France, Philippines, Greece, and Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) in Australia through the stories of the adventures of the Australian siblings, Nanak & Tara, told in its books. They were all introduced to each place or country’s culture, location, weather, people’s looks, food, widely used terms, festivals, and traditions. Each story brings both a sense of belonging and pride while promoting effective communication that cultivates peace, unity, and harmony. The World is Our Playground Series Book 6: Nanak & Tara’s Australian, Broome Adventure brings the Australian siblings Nanak & Tara to the First Nations country of the Djukun people. Accompanied by their grandfather Nanaji, and Noonuccal elder, Uncle Gene Blow, Nanak & Tara went to different places in Broome, Australia, and discovered Djukun’s people culture, history, and food. They rode a camel, went out to the sea, enjoyed a traditional feast by the beach, and learned of the Dreamtime story of why emus cannot fly. The sixth book of The World is Our Playgroundseries further supports its objective to educate, especially, primary-aged children to learn, realize, and appreciate individual differences and promote harmony despite the dissimilarities to prevent racism and bullying. These books also serve as teaching resource materials to parents and teachers. These books are living testaments that Singh’s cause and rally for inclusion and opportunity for all are not mere campaign slogans but her real way of life…to break down racial and cultural barriers that plague the society…including her very own community. For our first study on increasing preschool attendance (pre-COVID) called "Show Up to Grow Up" or SUGU, our research team employed novel measures of parental beliefs and attitudes at the time, including time preference. https://lnkd.in/gJttb2dD We have used these measures throughout many subsequent studies. In SUGU, we find our intervention increased attended days by 2.5 (0.15 standard deviations) and decreased chronic absenteeism by 9.3 percentage points (20%) over an 18-week period. Our results suggest that the treatment impact is stronger among those in the bottom quantiles of the attendance distribution. Novel survey measures collected at baseline suggest that SUGU made the importance of preschool more salient to parents who initially reported lower expectations for attendance, weaker beliefs about the importance of attendance to their children’s development, and higher present bias. Our new work to address modern barriers to school attendance is under way!
The Behavioral Insights and Parenting Lab | The University of Chicago is proud to be among the grantees in the Overdeck Family Foundation research initiative to identify post-pandemic drivers of chronic absenteeism and solutions to address this persistent problem. Excited to join this great cohort of scholars and extend our groundbreaking study published in 2021: https://lnkd.in/gJttb2dD. https://lnkd.in/gGaSBfZb

Since our bodies need a near-constant supply of water, its availability and quality are critical parts of the environment that shape child development. What surrounds us—and goes into us—shapes our biology, including our brain, immune, and metabolic systems. This is particularly true during the prenatal and early childhood periods when our bodies are especially sensitive to outside influences. 📚 Learn about how water affects children’s health, learning, and behavior and find strategies for addressing disparities in access to clean water here: https://bit.ly/4eQQUAv
