I had the pleasure of addressing folks gathered for the Sustainable Cosmetics Summit in New York City earlier this month. It’s always a pleasure to share the power of biomimicry with an audience already aware that the natural world is a storehouse of relevant chemical knowledge waiting to be discovered and applied in a successful, sustainable, circular economy. Other bio-inspired approaches identify individual biological compounds that might be isolated and formulated into new or existing products. Biomimicry, on the other hand, can shine a spotlight on the deep patterns underlying the various molecular-scale strategies developed by diverse species to achieve desired functions. These deep patterns are the keys to unlocking a wide range of novel, sustainable solutions relevant to cosmetics such as moisture management, coloration, and protection from environmental factors. While a 30-minute presentation and Q&A session is enough to spur interest in biomimicry, imagine what can be accomplished during an intense, week-long immersion workshop on the principles behind nature’s life-friendly chemistry and materials. Join us on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada this coming October for "Biomimicry Thinking: Innovation Inspired by Nature’s Chemistry" (https://lnkd.in/eDM_uhHH).
