Being on the road, meeting suppliers and buyers at the ANZ Producer Marketplace around the country, has been incredibly inspiring. It’s been great fun spending time with so many amazing suppliers who use Upstock, plus meeting up and coming producers. 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 There’s one last ANZ Producer Marketplace happening Monday 25 March in Christchurch, at Majestic on Durham. Make sure you come along, you do NOT want to miss this if you’re involved in the food business as a buyer or a supplier! 👨🏼🍳🧄🍯🥩 At each show there’s been the perfect combo of workshops and producer tastings. In Nelson, Mark A'Court, owner of Fresh Choice Nelson, provided extremely valuable insights for local producers on how they can get ranged in his supermarket. He also provided heaps of insights about supermarket trends and food trends he’s observed that have shaped the industry over the past 30 years. ⭐️Nikki Neate⭐️ Neate provided an incredible and thorough list of what suppliers need to get right – including brand story, category story, value vs volume, customer research, packaging, sizing and share of shelf, pricing pricing pricing pricing pricing, unit economics, how promotions and discounts are your friend, building capacity to scale up. The fundamental message was: a great product isn’t enough, you need to think of the business strategy in the context of the competitive and commercial landscape.  Then Freya Slessor talked about having a sustainability strategy and making sure economic sustainability is top of your list, and that’s not in conflict with eco sustainability – they’re deeply intertwined. The two big takeaways were – ”enough precision to make a decision” and don’t be paralysed – just do something, even if it’s small. As if that wasn’t enough, the rest of the morning had deep dive presentations on digital advertising and social media marketing. Managing any one of these areas alone is A LOT for a small business to manage. Put it all together, and it’s extremely intimidating. Plus, there’s so many other parts of running a business that weren’t covered, like accounting and inventory management, shipping and logistics. It makes you really wonder how anyone does it all! The reality is that everyone starts by taking one step at a time. We all start from humble beginnings, taking on each challenge as it comes, learning and growing. If we’re lucky and people like what we’re doing, then we start to build a base of customers and a team of supporters who all want to see this thing succeed. It’s never perfect – there will always be big gaps, embarrassing problem areas, and serious challenges. But if you show up every day, if you’re able to take a step forward more days than you step backwards, and you look after your customers and your people – you can achieve great things and find amazing success. SOFi is a B2B company that sells to distributors and food service businesses. But that doesn’t mean our marketing needs to be dry or boring! Last week, we attended the RC Show, Canada’s biggest food service event. Canada is a crucial market, and we wanted to do something unconventional and impactful. So, we reached out to a marketing agency and were quoted $40,000 for the campaign! We thought there had to be a more cost-effective way to stand out. We regrouped internally, went back to the drawing board, and this was the result: We designed a campaign around the slogan “Go Topless” because our cups have built-in lids, eliminating the need to buy separate lids. First, we had a major initiative. Instead of a typical Trade Show booth, we turned ours into a coffee shop and named it “Hot Topless Bar.” We had a coffee machine and a barista to pour coffee into our Hot Cups. Then, we had to catch people’s attention — and we did with two bold guerrilla marketing tactics. We placed urinal mats in the urinals (we went there) and power-washed our “Hot Topless Bar” invite onto the sidewalk. Standing out at trade shows is tricky because hundreds of companies fight for attention. We made a big impact with creative, small initiatives and saved ourselves $37,000. Plus, the “Go topless” slogan was a great conversation starter. 😅
