I am so happy these five students, who conducted research with me, either as participants of my NSF SMRP or my M-PURE program, were all granted “Highest Honors/Honors” one week before graduation. Three of the five students presented their senior investigative projects (SIPs) on research they completed in the Chemistry Program in the Department of Natural and Behavior Sciences. One of the five students was granted Highest Honors in both Chemistry and Biology. Two National Science Foundation grants supported all research, the HBCU Research Initiative Award (RIA), and the HBCU Target Infusion Project(TIP). #chemistry, #STEM, #research, #jcsu

Manager, National Training and Career Development Programs | Fostering the Next Generation of Neuroscience Leaders at Kennedy Krieger Institute
Attention all students considering a Ph.D.! As you may know, there are 3 major hurdles to jump over: the application, the dissertation defense, and the qualifying (or comprehensive) exam. While most are familiar with the first and third, the "quals" exam can be a bit of a mystery. Luckily, Sabrina Daglish has written a fantastic blog article for BioNavigators to help students decode this weird part of the Ph.D. process. Check out her article at https://lnkd.in/eNR7uv-j and gain a better understanding of what to expect during your Ph.D. journey. #PhD #QualifyingExams #graduateschool Colleagues: please repost and share with anyone you think could benefit!

2022 #BeckmanScholar (and recent graduate!) Helen Xia talks about alkylation of indoles, the importance of resilience and adaptability, and her future MD-PhD plans in the Beckman Friday Feature. Mentored Undergraduate Research Experience Leads to Key Lab Role and Journal Publication for University of Richmond Student Helen Xia, who graduated from the University of Richmond on May 12, 2024, is making a giant leap toward a goal she set as a teen: Becoming a physician-scientist who can save and improve people’s lives. Xia, who majored in biochemistry & molecular biology and minored in leadership studies, is now on her way to UT Southwestern where she will enter an MD-PhD program through the Perot Family Scholars Medical Scientist Training Program. “I am dedicated to conducting both basic and clinical translational research in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. To best achieve this, I need both the research expertise to advance science and the clinical expertise to implement these advancements,” shared Xia. “The MD-PhD program is the perfect bridge between my dual passions: scientific research and medicine.” That meant applying to MD-PhD programs – and undertaking a lot of preparation. Not merely the kind of preparation that involves getting paperwork in order or taking certain prerequisites, but the sort of preparation that someone with a singular focus or a dream or a calling embarks on to meld themselves into whatever it takes to achieve success. For Xia, that preparation started when she was just a young child, and it was supported largely by her immigrant parents who did not have careers in the sciences themselves but wanted their daughter to pursue her passions and challenge herself with new endeavors.
