As we approach 2024, here's a quick overview of CDP's reporting structure: 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 - CDP covers three main areas: climate change, water security, and forests. - Companies can respond to one or more of these questionnaires, depending on their environmental impacts and stakeholder expectations. #Significance - CDP is one of the most widely used environmental disclosure platforms, with over 18,700 companies reporting in 2023. - Investor signatories, representing over $130 trillion in assets, use CDP data to inform their investment decisions and engage with companies on sustainability issues. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 - The CDP reporting cycle opens in April and closes in July each year. - Companies submit their responses through CDP's online platform, which are then scored and made publicly available. - Scores range from D- to A, with A being the highest, recognizing companies that demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship. Some question the future of voluntary reporting frameworks like CDP in the face of a more regulated ESG future. Well, what do I think? ...that CDP only continues to solidify its invaluable role as a reporting (and accountability) mechanism in the evolving landscape of environmental disclosure! In 2022, disclosure to CDP rose by 24% (from 18,700 to 23,000), which marks a 140% increase from disclosure in 2020. This is because voluntary disclosure through CDP provides a competitive edge today AND helps position companies well for more regulatory requirements tomorrow. The number of companies reporting through research provider and environmental disclosure system CDP disclosing that they have a 1.5°C-aligned climate transition plan in place jumped by more than 40% over the past year, and more than 60% of reporting companies indicated that they have or plan to have such a plan in place within the next two years, according to a new report released by CDP. CDP runs a global environmental disclosure system, enabling investors and other stakeholders to measure and track organization’s performance in key environmental sustainability areas including climate change, deforestation, water security, and plastic-related impact.
