Over the past year, Burlodge worked together with sustainability consultancy Bioregional to map out our carbon footprint for Scopes 1, 2, and 3 and put in place a robust and ambitious roadmap to reach Net Zero by 2045 across all our offices and manufacturing sites.   Our collaboration has also helped us to achieve NHS Evergreen Assessment Level 2 status in the UK.   The decision to hire a third-party consultant to conduct this work is essential to our Journey to Net Zero and Bioregional’ s commitment to what they do was a leading example throughout. The carbon reduction plan we developed in collaboration with Bioregional sets out both our near-term targets for 2030 and our longer-term targets for 2045.   We take this commitment seriously wherever we operate and, as with all aspects of our business, are determined to be leaders on this issue, not followers.      Read the case study here: https://bit.ly/45QFSHa

In his editorial of our new Sustainability Highlight Report, our CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer Bill Anderson emphasizes that sustainability is central to everything we do at Bayer. It enables us to create inclusive growth but, even more, to create value for society. Our overall goal against this background is to contribute significantly to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Already in 2019, we have therefore set ourselves very ambitious sustainability targets for 2030 and I am very pleased that we continued to make good progress in the past very difficult year. In the area of health we have reached 75 million people in economically or medically underserved communities with self-care products, and we were able to support 46 million women with modern contraception. In the agricultural sector we supported 53 million smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries. Overall, we have improved in all three areas compared to the previous year. Our goal is to reach 100 million people in each of these areas by 2030. However, our sustainability efforts are also about our own ecological footprint. As many of you know, we want to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 42 percent by 2029 compared to 2019. We are currently at a reduction of 20.2 percent. We have also made progress with Scope 3 emissions. They increased in 2022 – but in 2023 we were able to turn it around and reduced Scope 3 emissions by 4.2% relative to our 2019 baseline. The challenge ahead remains, and in 2023 we redoubled our efforts to seek further reduced emissions in the future. At the same time, we want to use only electricity from renewable energies from 2030 onwards. We are currently at 35.4 percent. So, we still have quite a way to go. I am therefore all the more pleased that last year we signed an agreement with Cat Creek Energy (CCE), an Independent Power Producer in the field of renewable energies, which will make a significant contribution to reducing our carbon footprint in energy procurement. This agreement marks one of the biggest single renewable energy deals in the United States. It will secure 40 percent of Bayer's global and 60 percent of Bayer's US-purchased electricity demand out of renewable sources. Another highlight was the presentation of our water strategy at the UN Water Conference in New York. It reflects our intrinsic motivation to address the water crisis and make a valuable contribution to overcoming the global water crisis. I could go on and on, but I wanted to leave it at a few highlights. But I don't want to finish before I have thanked everyone who contributed to this report. I know it's a lot of work! Compared to 2023, Chr. Hansen climbs ten steps up the ladder, coming in as number eight in the assessment of the world’s largest publicly traded companies. The ranking is based on 25 key environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics and metrics. Among the biotech companies in the Global 100, Chr. Hansen is the best ranked company. This is a clear recognition of the daily efforts by our many colleagues to ensure we keep delivering on our sustainability commitments. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped strengthen the backbone of Chr. 🌱 Good news to share. @OMV’s recently published Sustainability Report for 2023 outlines the progress made in our sustainability and circularity efforts.   🎯 We could reduce the Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 25 percent since 2019.   I recommend you have a look at our performance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects within the OMV Group. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dvzjpur7   Some highlights from 2023:   ✅ OMV reached a 74% waste recovery or recycling rate. ✅ We established a production capacity of almost 200 kilo tons of sustainable polyolefins and other chemicals. ✅ More than 45 million euros were dedicated toward community and social investments. ✅ More than 12 million euros were invested in employee trainings.   The report also explains many of our sustainable business projects. One example is how we are building Europe’s largest waste sorting plant with our partner @Interzero. In light of the recent revelations by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which saw the net zero commitments of over 200 companies, including sustainability frontrunners like Diageo and Unilever, being "removed", it's a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges in the journey towards net-zero. One of the key takeaways from this situation is the acknowledgment of Scope 3 emissions as a significant barrier for many companies. A profound yet often overlooked insight is that if every company effectively addressed its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, the complex challenge of managing Scope 3 emissions would be significantly diminished. This is because one company's Scope 3 emissions are inherently another's Scope 1 and 2. The task of mitigating Scope 3 emissions, daunting due to its reliance on the actions of suppliers and partners, becomes more attainable when we each commit to cleaning our own house first. https://hubs.la/Q02psD4W0
