Difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic syringe filter membrane: 1. Hydrophilic Syringe Filters: - These filters are easily wetted by aqueous solutions. - Ideal for filtering water-based samples or samples containing polar solvents. - Common applications include: - Biological sample preparation: Used for cell cultures, protein solutions, and buffers. - Environmental and water analysis: Essential for removing particulates and contaminants from aqueous samples. - Pharmaceutical and biotechnology: Filtration of aqueous drug formulations and water-based solutions. 2. Hydrophobic Syringe Filters: - Do not wet in water, but they do wet in low surface tension liquids (e.g., organic solvents like alcohols). - Useful for applications where water repellency is desired. - Not suitable for aqueous samples due to their water-repelling behavior. Understanding the Differences: Crystallization vs. Crash Crystallization 💎🔬 Crystallization is a fundamental process in various industries, from pharmaceuticals to food production. However, there's often confusion between standard crystallization and crash crystallization. Let's clear that up! Crystallization 🌡️: This is a controlled process where a solution is gradually cooled or solvent is slowly evaporated to form solid crystals. The goal is to achieve high-purity crystals with a consistent size and shape. This method ensures a smooth and controlled formation, allowing for better quality control and predictability. Crash Crystallization ⚡: This method often involves a rapid change in conditions, such as quickly cooling the solution or adding an anti-solvent. Crash crystallization can also occur when a solution becomes too supersaturated before nucleation happens. The excessive supersaturation forces the solute to “crash out” of the solution abruptly. While this can be useful for quick results, it often leads to less uniform and lower purity crystals (as more impurities and solvents tend to become trapped in the crystal mass) compared to the controlled approach. To avoid crash crystallization during a recent recrystallization procedure, we added a suspension of seed crystals as the hot solution slowly cooled, allowing crystallization to occur gradually, and avoiding the solution becoming too supersaturated. [Process Mass Intensity] Decreasing the amount of resource usage to make an Active Ingredient is one of the major green chemistry challenges for the pharmaceutical industry. Process mass intensity (PMI) is the key green mass-based metric for measuring the resource usage impact of a synthetic chemistry process. ♻️ Still, improving PMI doesn’t necessarily mean changing the core reaction route nor reactants of an API synthesis. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 Typically, understanding the kinetics and the key process parameters, can allow drastic PMI improvement. 📈 Based on the initial lab conditions, reaction engineering such as: ✔️ Reagents concentrations and solvent screening. ✔️ Implementing physical operations modeling for precisely measuring the conditions required for switching solvent system. ✔️ Solvent volumes for product extraction organic/aqueous media. ✔️ Solvent volumes for a recrystallization step and/or washing the cake. These studies can significantly decrease the process mass intensity (PMI) by more than 60 % with respect to the original process.
