Dr. Leonie van 't Hag and myself are looking for potential PhD candidates to work on the project: Using starchy/cellulosic agricultural waste in packaging materials: Modeling metabolic flux regulation during bacterial fermentation via population balances coupled with cybernetic models This will be a fully-funded position under Monash Malaysia's Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS). The candidate will spend 33 months in Monash University Malaysia and up to 9 months in Monash University in Australia. Application for 2025's intake will close on 21 February 2025, but interested candidates who meet the admission and eligibility criteria may send their CVs and a cover letter to me at ho.yongkuen@monash.edu. The successful candidate is expected to enroll by December 2025. For more information about the GEMS scholarship application protocol and eligibility criteria, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gP3G_3uh Project summary: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable polymers produced from bacterial fermentation of sugars/fatty acids from the breakdown of starchy/cellulosic waste. Their properties and compositions depend on side-group structure which can be tailored by manipulating bacterial metabolism through appropriate feedstock selection. Understanding the interaction between a complex feedstock environment and metabolic diversity is crucial. This sophisticated interplay of events, where microbes respond to polymeric environmental changes by regulating intracellular metabolic fluxes, can be modelled using population balances coupled with cybernetic models. This study aims to explore the dynamic role of metabolic regulation to achieve the desired PHA properties in packaging applications, addressing both food and plastic waste issues. #PhD #Scholarship #Monash #ChemicalEngineering #Modeling #Malaysia #Australia

Please welcome Nurdana Orynbek, a new PhD student at the IBD group. "I received my Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences with a major in Chemistry and Biology from Université de Strasbourg, France. I have then completed my Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree in Biological and Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Bioeconomy at the universities of Reims Champagne-Ardennes, AgroParisTech (France), and Liège (Belgium), where I worked on a research project on the biotechnological production of aroma compounds for foods and cosmetics using agro-industrial residues. My Master's thesis was done at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) of Vienna, focusing on the microbial strategies for acetate production from industrial by-products with a potential for CO2 fixation. Currently, I joined the IBD group and TU Wien for a PhD project in microbial oil production, and I am eager to continue working in this direction in future! My hobbies include dancing, climbing & bouldering, reading and video editing." #PhDstudent #lipidproduction #sustainability

🌟 After few years past, I just remembering what I went through during the journey. For nearly six years, I poured my energy into the lab—working 24/7 to develop an innovative approach for the first time. From isolating strains to optimizing processes, it was an Hard road. But the hard work paid off: my Ph.D. thesis was recognized as the best of the year, and I was honored with the Sanggar Sanjung Award for publication in 2020. Weekly progress meetings, endless experiments, and troubleshooting complex machinery—it was no joke in biotechnology. Running experiments in the lab, and analyzing data, studying for new methods in the library simultaneously was tiring. I found myself sleeping more in the lab and car than at home. Looking back, I would choose same, but this time with more belief in myself. There were moments of doubt and exhaustion, but journey gave me the strength. I am deeply grateful to all researchers pushing the boundaries in upstream and downstream bioprocesses. I’m truly proud of having a strong foundation in both processes as a lady dealing with machinary—it took time, patience, and strength. My Ph.D. wasn’t just about earning a degree; it shaped me into a problem-solver. #Biotechnology #PhDJourney #Innovation #Bioprocessing
