Peer support, peer-to-peer programs, near-age peer support, and youth-driven resources should not be an afterthought. Not only because young people ask for them but also because they make a difference. One example is Youth Aware of Mental Health-- "YAM was evaluated in EU-wide Randomized Controlled Trial in which more than 11,000 youth participated. The Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE) research project sought to evaluate three school-based interventions for mental health promotion and suicide prevention. Results found YAM effective in reducing new cases of suicide attempts and severe suicidal ideation by approximately 50%. New cases of depression were reduced by approximately 30% in the youth participating in YAM." I'm grateful to have been quoted on how school-based support can increase access to support by removing barriers like time and costs for youth and families. Recent data from Axios shows some encouraging news: In seven of the nine states studied, youth mental health has finally begun to improve after a major dip during the pandemic. The research showed that dedicating more resources to student well-being over the past few years is finally showing results. While some of these numbers are still below pre-pandemic levels, these findings are a clear sign that we are heading in the right direction. #YouthMentalHealth #MentalHealth #BehavioralHealth

It's heartening to see some states report decreases in youth mental health issues for the first time in several years, as reported in this article from Axios. When I was at Children's Hospital Colorado, we became the first organization in the U.S. to declare a pediatric mental health emergency during the pandemic. This declaration brought increased focus and resources to youth mental health in Colorado. The recent progress is a testament to the commitment made by the state to tackle this issue head-on. By prioritizing mental health and providing the necessary support, we’re seeing many states make positive strides towards better mental health outcomes for our youth. Let's continue to support and invest in the mental well-being of our young people.
