What's summer like at ExcelPrep? Check this out. Real images of our real kids are saved for our parents. But these pictures do a pretty great job of letting you know we are equally serious about play and academic skill-building. Kids Master Skills L.L.C., Neurodiversity-Affirming Occupational Therapist, Faculty at Boston University, Board Member STAR Institute
A child's occupation is to study the world and to investigate and explore their occupations within the world. In their day-to-day lives, two different children may engage in extremely varied types of play - and there are many types of play! What is important for adults to realize and to remember is that ALL play serves a purpose and that a given child on a given day may choose one play occupation over another. Often, as OTs and among other professionals, we seek to guide a child to play in a certain manner. But is this in the child's best interest? Should we focus instead on following their lead and engaging with them in a relationship that supports their autonomy, regulation, and yes, even skill-building!? What are your thoughts on this topic? What do you see with kids and adults in the day-to-day? What is YOUR favorite type of play? #occupationaltherapy #sbot #schoolbasedot #preschoolplay #autism #autismmom #autismteacher #autismparent #neurodiversity #neurodiversityaffirming #autistic #actuallyautistic #speechtherapy #cota #ota #aota #asha #spedparent #spedteacher #preschool #kindergarten

Emotional intelligence + intellectual intelligence = the WHOLE child. Practicing and supporting social-emotional skills at home is essential to your child’s growth both emotionally and academically. Cultivating strong emotional intelligence helps the child self-regulate their emotions so they are more open to learning, developing problem-solving skills, and basic socialization skills that are all fundamental for kindergarten and upper-grade levels. Some skills that are easy to work on at home are: 🔎 problem identification: is a problem big or small? 🧑🧒 can easily separate from their caregiver 😤 Building frustration tolerance . . . . #growwithbeck #preschool #kindergarten #kindergartenadmissions #earlychildhood #literacy #earlylearning #NYCeducation #earlyliteracy #scienceofreading

Like many of you, I am facing a pivotal relational and life transition as our oldest graduates high school next week. I came across a helpful article that speaks to helping parents navigate this big relational and life change and set them and their children up for a close yet autonomous and respectful relationship. https://lnkd.in/gwQ5yx4K. #graduation #highschoolgraduation #parenting #boundaries #relationships

Early Childhood - Outdoor Independence It is a joy to see this student showing her independence while accomplishing her goal! Independence, fostered through purposeful activities, significantly benefits a child's development. By engaging in self-directed tasks, children develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a sense of responsibility. These activities encourage autonomy and confidence, laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning. When these experiences are extended to an outdoor environment, the benefits are amplified. Outdoor activities promote physical health, enhance sensory experiences, and provide a natural setting for exploration and discovery. This combination nurtures a child’s holistic development, fostering a deep connection with nature and a well-rounded growth. #purposefulactivity #independence #autonomy #confidence #criticalthinking #problemsolving #exploration #nature #tma #montessori #privateschool #arlingtontx #arlington #texas #infant #nido #toddler #earlychildhood #preschool #kindergarten #elementary #education #privateeducation #nontraditional #themontessoriacademyofarlington

Building the skills to read with your child helps set them up for success in their academic future. Start by being a resource and an example for your child. Still, read with them, and let them see you reading! But here are skills I like to advise clients to work with their child outside of their sessions/school. 1. Practice rhyming 2. Make sure they understand first letter sounds in words 3. Practicing letter blending so they have an understanding of how to do it on their own 4. Knowing letter sounds for both uppercase AND lowercase letters! . . . . #growwithbeck #preschool #kindergarten #kindergartenadmissions #earlychildhood #literacy #earlylearning #NYCeducation #earlyliteracy #scienceofreading
