Reflecting on the HETT Conferences - wholeheartedly recommend! 🙌 Attending conferences is part and parcel of a life and career in the medical field. We attend them as medical students, as newly qualified doctors, as consultants and professors! No matter how high up we become in our career, attending conferences are prerequisite. I attended the HETT conferences, which had a large focus on digital innovation within the NHS, something I am incredibly passionate and interested in. What did I learn? 🖥️the importance of generative AI and how it can help in tackling the staffing shortage  👥Tech and Digital Application should complement the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan and will optimise its outcomes. Apart from Tech, HETT conferences also take an interest in:  💊pharmacogenics  🙋personalised medicine  - and much more! I wholeheartedly recommend attending these conferences if you want to widen your horizons and effect some more change outside your clinic, ward or operating theatre! If you’re interested, register your interest for the HETT show taking place in late September year! Who knows what new interest you may develop ! 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗠𝗖, 𝗗𝗿 𝗡𝘂𝗿 Elayni Borhan said the use of the latest technology helps doctors make diagnoses more quickly and accurately, especially to heart attack and stroke victims who are wheeled into the emergency department. The AI ultrasound machine is also able to list possible situations that occur to patients from internal bleeding to pneumothorax, besides helping doctors to make better clinical decisions for patients in the emergency department, and indirectly reducing the waiting time to receive urgent treatment. As a medical practitioner, you know that education is important to help patients create the best health outcome. However, you also know that the implications of possible deficiencies in knowledge can have detrimental effects on your facility. “Obesity impacts medical imaging. The increases in weight and girth of the patient population are testing the current limits of imaging equipment. With the increasing prevalence of overweight and obese populations, more patients are encountering difficulties in obtaining diagnostic-quality images.” So if a patient insists on being scanned with a full body CT, what advice would you give them? The issue of getting great image quality from obese patients lies with the technologist doing the scan, and thier knowledge of the system they are using. To many technologists don’t fully understand the concept of dose in CT and just how to optimize for large as well as smaller, or more accurately, more dense and less dense patients. In CT imaging the maximum MAS is determined by the system MA limitations and the gantry rotation time. So for larger, ie, more dense patients, to maintain the same level of image quality the technologist must slow down the gantry rotation speed to obtain more MAS. With thinner patients where dose modulation is at the lowest level of exposure control, they must consider that 120 KVp is to much penetration and lower the Kv to 100. They will see an increase in effective MAS and a decrease in CTDI. Since MAS is equivalent to photons hitting the detector, and more is more for reconstruction, the image quality will be better.

The life changing technology of Spectral AI (NASDAQ: MDAI). Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) is the first hospital in the world to trial DeepView, an AI-powered imaging tool designed to assess burn injuries. DeepView provides crucial data about burn depth that isn't visible to the naked eye, helping medical teams decide early whether a burn will heal naturally or require surgical intervention, such as a skin graft. The tool can be used from the day of the injury and is accessible in multiple settings, including bedside, outpatient clinics, and operating theaters. Over 50 patients have benefited from the technology so far. DeepView’s ability to provide early, accurate analysis is expected to reduce patient anxiety and facilitate quicker decisions regarding treatment. The device, which is continually updated and trained by burn surgeons in the U.S., is anticipated to improve care for adult and child burn victims by predicting healing times and eventually estimating burn sizes. One patient, Paul Loates, expressed relief after learning through the DeepView tool that his burns would heal naturally, avoiding the need for a skin graft. In a captivating moment during Medical Technology Week, Kim Purkis stood before an audience, showcasing the parenteral nutrition pump that has been her lifeline for eight years. This event reinforced a powerful message: patient power is crucial in transforming the National Health Service (NHS) with medical technology. It's evident the NHS is at a pivotal crossroads where technology can redefine healthcare. Maree's story reiterates this, sharing how her direct contributions to hip and knee implant design resulted in life-changing surgery. Her narrative was a key highlight at the Parliamentary reception, emphasising the indispensable role of patient involvement in shaping better health outcomes. The Medical Technology Group has been championing this cause, urging the NHS to integrate patient experiences in decision-making processes. Notably, two enlightening reports have surfaced, demonstrating best practices and appealing for a broader adoption of this patient-centric approach. Support from the likes of Lord Markham, a minister at the Department for Health and Social Care, underpins the significance of patient engagement in technological advancements. He pointed out how digitally advanced trusts are setting exemplary benchmarks for escalating innovation across the NHS, a move that can triple patient treatment capacity according to the MTG's 2022 backlog report. David Lawson of the DHSC echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity of patient insight to formulate effective medtech policies. This aligns with the government's new Medical Technology Strategy, designed to intertwine patient experiences with medtech development. Furthermore, Dr Sam Roberts from NICE lauded the MTG's efforts in canvassing patient groups, advocating for their continuous input on medical technology experiences to delineate excellence in healthcare services. The reception, hosted by Steve Brine MP, was an uplifting conclusion to the year for the MTG, marking its impact on governmental policy and highlighting medical technology as a remedy to longstanding NHS challenges. It served as a heartfelt reminder to industry and patient groups about their transformative contributions to patient care.
