The Finnish proverb "Fire is a bad master but a good servant" highlights the contradictory nature of fire, which can be destructive when uncontrolled and beneficial when utilized by humans. However, it is important to look beyond a human-centred perspective and recognise fire's role in natural ecosystems and conservation. To minimise the overall social costs of fire, integrated fire management policies and practices should focus on reducing fuel hazards, reducing unwanted ignitions, suppressing wildfires, controlling unwanted invasive plant species, the maintaining of ecological processes and biodiversity conservation, and restoring degraded ecosystems.
