January chills – not just for us, but for the birds too! As winter sets in, thousands of birds adapt by seeking refuge in Malta’s towns and villages. From the charming Robin defending its tiny territory to the vibrant Black Redstart and the charismatic Wagtail gathering in impressive roosts, our urban spaces come alive with these winter visitors. Did you know? Volunteers have been counting White Wagtails roosting in Valletta since 1985, and last year over 16,000 were recorded! Nicholas Galea writes about all this and more in an article published last Sunday in the Maltese newspaper il-Mument. Check it out to learn how we can cherish and protect these feathered guests. Small acts like offering food scraps, reducing noise, or adjusting pruning schedules can make a big difference.

If you’ve been following our tips, your backyard might already be buzzing with bee hotels. Now, it’s time to winter-proof them to help them through the cold season. Here's what you can do (from least to most involved) 🐝 Leave the leaves: Piles of leaves and dirt provide safe, undisturbed spaces for hibernation. 🐝 Cover your hives: Shield nesting tubes with netting to keep birds away when food starts running low. 🐝 Relocate to cool, dry spots: Move bee hotels to sheltered spots like sheds to keep them out of the winter weather. Everywhere in Marin you’re surrounded by natural beauty. About one-third of the county, or 118,000 acres, is forested woodland. The county is dominated by Mount Tamalpais with streams and valleys falling through verdant and protected forests of Redwood and Madrone trees. Marin is surrounded on three sides by water: the Pacific Ocean, San Pablo Bay, and San Francisco Bay, with dramatic coastlines and vistas. Hiking is a very popular pastime. Marin has 13 small towns and 14 villages. The towns, which average 16,000 people, are mostly arrayed across the hills and valleys on the east side of Mount Tamalpais, facing the bay. The villages of West Marin are adjacent to parks and farmland and along the Pacific coast. Marin is in one of five areas of the world (about 3%) that have a Mediterranean climate, with mild wet winters and warm, dry summers. From May through October, average daytime temperatures are in the 70’s with little or no precipitation. From November through April, daytime temperatures average about 60 degrees during the day with occasional rain. Nighttime temperatures average from the mid 30’s to the mid 50’s year-round, infrequently freezing, with no more than frost on roofs. Learn more at www.livinginmarin.com 💻 Have questions! When we talk about supporting goals like making the Auckland Islands pest free, it's not a pipe dream. The amount of research that goes into feasibility studies and into understanding just how we make something like this happen is phenomenal. These islands are raw, wild landscapes, two days by boat from the southernmost tip of New Zealand. They are subantarctic, wild, windy, and utterly captivating. Check out full details on the five step plan that has been developed by DOC. https://lnkd.in/gCuVvAkc #AucklandIslands #ProtectOurIslands
