Another #internship opportunity for U.S. Department of Labor scrutiny. It’s not clear whether the employer will pay at least minimum wage, if the candidate has already graduated and therefore will not get college credit. Yet it is clear this is a job and the person doing it will have duties essential to the #business operations. It won’t be primarily a learning environment. #Employers, #interns are not “free labor” for you to exploit. #ShareTheWealth #EmploymentIsAPartnership

It's National Sunglasses Day! We love a bright reason to celebrate protecting your eyes and practicing good eye health! Here are some tips to stay safe and stylish: - Look for sunglasses that block 99% of UVA and UVB rays. - Try on some larger frames or wraparound styles for extra protection. - Consider polarized lenses to cut glare, especially helpful when spending time around water or driving. Remember- sunglasses are a year-round necessity, not just for summer. UV rays can damage your eyes even on cloudy days. Harrison benefits include vision coverage to help you stay safe and healthy no matter the season! And don't forget when you head outside- grab your sunglasses! #HarrisonCC #CRH #OneCRH #Construction #OurEmployeesAreTheBest #SafetyFirst #Tennessee #NorthCarolina #Safety #Quality #Integrity #Jobs #JobOpening #JobOpportunity #Career #Internships #NationalSunglassesDay #EyeHealth

If you're #interning this summer, you might already be onboarding and looking forward to acquiring new skills. What’s truly amazing, though, are the unexpected lessons and experiences that lie ahead. I was set to be a photography and marketing #intern for Phillips Petroleum in the summer of my last year of college. My primary contact was Jerry Poppenhouse who was one of the first graphic designers to use photography as his main artistic medium. In his 27 years with Phillips, Jerry became one of the most widely traveled photographers in the company's history, going through at least three fully stamped passports; every stamp recalling a new series of wild adventures. My college crew meanwhile was happily on their way to Honolulu to take a three-hour class on Hawaiian history over the summer. But I had this awesome #internship planned! On my first day, I learned that there were to be some #changes to what I had expected. Jerry was called to a month-long photography stint on an oil platform in the North Sea and it was not decked out for women at that time so I could not go. Instead, I worked for several departments at Phillips including the patent attorneys in the Research Center and the newly formed IT computing group in the windowless Borg ship-like building. I remember receiving a badge which was required for the IT building, but somehow had a problem with wearing it. I remember telling my new security officer friends, "I don't need a stinkin' badge." At the end of summer, one of the guards presented me with a custom drawn caricature of me tossing the badge in the air. Loved those guys. I also learned how to do things I didn't like. Perhaps that's one of the most important lessons to learn early in your career. I was once asked by a patent attorney to take shorthand for a letter. I didn't know shorthand and he proceeded to spray out a bunch of words lightning fast. I began to ask questions and he said, "No. Write it." I was probably more vexed that he thought I should know shorthand because I was female, but hey, it was the 80s. And it taught me to that not everyone realizes that I've got more to offer. Be cool. Don't be uncool. So, if you're #interning this summer, here are a few #nontraditional takeaways to look for: 1. Get to know the people well. One or two of them might help you in five years when you're applying for a job. Sometimes the #connections help you more than the skills and abilities. 2. Spend time taking care of yourself and work at your own pace. An internship is like a #bardo. an intermediate transitional state between school and real life, which allows you to learn and make mistakes without too many consequences. This is the easiest it will get before you take a full-time job. 3. Connect with others interns at the same company or in the same city and start #networking. They will be lifelong friends. 🖊

As most people who follow my posts you will know we are currently renovating our holiday let, ready to rent it out next year. So far outside of finding the time capsule the build at least for me has been pretty dull mostly watching the builders dig out the floor and do some brick laying. This weekend I got to do something a bit more exciting. We went to look at furnishings, specifically sofas. We went into several shops and looked around and then we went to ScS at Sprowston Retail Park Norwich. As soon as we entered we were approached by Favour. He was fantastic! He listened to what we actually wanted and what we wanted it for then immediately showed us the models that would suit our needs and demonstrated how they worked. When we said we wished we had bought a tape measure he automatically produced two tape measures from his apron and gave them to us! Extra brownie points here for not just giving one to my husband. My experience of Favor was a really positive one, making me want to buy from SCS, and Favor to make sure he got his commission. Favor did not have to be that helpful and enthusiastic, he could have just lurked at the back of the shop hoping the day would end, instead he made his day interesting by engaging with his customers. Not only did he make my experience such a great one but no doubt made his day more enjoyable. If you were Favor you could think “this is just” a weekend job, a holiday job, an internship but as with most things a job can be what you make of it. Use every opportunity as a learning opportunity, a way to engage with someone and build your network/relationship. Be more Favor! PS I hope ScS see this and recognise Favor. let's make him employee of the month! #customerservice #intern #celebrategreatness #earlycareer
