When 75% of our healthcare spending is due to preventable diseases that can be managed with food, somewhere along the way… we lost our way. Dining room tables have been ditched for drive-thrus, and the term “whole foods” has become more synonymous with a grocery store chain than actual nutritious food. Meanwhile, workers are on sick leave due to diet-related illnesses… racking up a whopping $153 billion in lost productivity. Where did we go wrong, and how can employers help get their employees’ health and their insurance premiums back on track?  Spoiler alert. bitewell has an answer for that. Big thanks to Employee Benefit News and Deanna Cuadra for their feature on bitewell's mission to give employees access to nutritional food as a healthcare benefit. Check out their article below to find out why we believe food as medicine… is the future of health.

This isn't the "healthcare industry's" problem to solve. Do I agree that our food and is a massive issue that should be addressed? He*ll yes. Is the answer to be found in the swampy healthcare industry and adding more "healthcare" benefits? A resounding h*ll no in my opinion.

Wouldn’t the way to pay for this be via a more robust farm bill vs. coverage as a benefit? It doesn’t seem like there will be any savings for consumers or the healthcare system, as requiring it to be a benefit will only raise premiums. Maybe I’m missing something…

Maybe if payors didn’t spend the last several decades refusing to reimburse for prevention and early identification/intervention services that research has long shown to be effective in improving health outcomes
