Steam box / premium game pricing strategy is fascinating and could do with more rigorous collective analysis. Content Warning charged $0 for its first 24 hours on Steam Early Access. During that time, the game peaked at >200K concurrent players and maintained ~95% positive reviews. The price then increased to $8, and according to VG Insights Content Warning has achieved $12.5M in gross revenue - a pretty amazing achievement for the devs / Landfall Publishing. It's always fun to see developers take risks, and definitely on pricing strategy. My partner and I discussed Early Access pricing and achieving virality - just a mental exercise of how to attract a critical mass of players, reviews, earned media, etc. in the first few days on market. My partner posited marking the game ~60% off for the first few days and communicating this limited opportunity well to players and the community. The theory being if GREAT WALL is high quality, early adopters would contribute to building community, virality, word of mouth, etc. etc. that would result in dramatically increased exposure, sales, and lifetime gross revenue over a control case. If publishing independently, we would have total control on pricing - I doubt almost any publishers would allow a limited time super-steep discount at launch. But I'd be curious to hear from folks the non-obvious reasons why this isn't attempted. I would be interested to ask the Phillip Black type folks on the platform where pricing analyses are conducted for these types of highly unusual pricing strategies. I am updating our revenue model over next couple of weeks, and so I may create scenarios of extreme discounts for limited launch period and assume different elasticities. #studiolife #startuplife #marketing #pricing #virality #community #gaming #gameindustry
