Major American cities such as New York and San Francisco face serious problems — empty offices, population shifts, and declining tax revenues. I sat down with Columbia Professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh to discuss the 'urban doom loop', a cycle of spillover effects triggered by pandemic-era policies. Prioritizing financing infrastructure over holistic urban planning overlooks the importance of considering environmental and social factors in city development. Relying heavily on market forces to shape the built environment can result in cities that prioritize profit over people and fail to address pressing social and environmental issues. Promoting the expansion of structured suburbs as a solution to urban challenges overlooks the negative consequences of sprawl, such as increased car dependency, habitat destruction, and social isolation. While leveraging existing cities the approach described fails to prioritize the integration of cities with nature and overlooks the importance of sustainability, resilience, and community well-being in urban planning. In contrast sustainable city planning should embrace the interconnectedness of land and water resources, guiding development in harmony with nature's rhythms. It’s time to get back to early understandings of “the science of sand. “ BTW- California depends on borrowed water where over 19 million people will go without if there is one serious earthquake are you kidding?

The first couple sentences of this identities what can be a major debate in places like Washington and Oregon, which both have urban growth boundaries that restrict the amount of land allowed to be developed for housing. Will more #housing density increase affordability? Or choice? Or do we simply lack the land supply to have affordability? Let me explain: Its still a major misconception among residents in many Washington communities that developers and builders build more and more density because they are greedy and local elected officials allow it because they are incompetent or in the pocket of the developers and builders. The reality is that density is a function of a state law (Growth Management Act) established in the early 90s that drew lines on a map to create boundaries within which nearly all growth must happen. For the most part, those boundaries haven’t moved and state and regional planners largely don’t want to see them move, ever. At the same time, Washington is a popular place for people to want to move. It’s a supply and demand problem. What’s being proposed to solve this supply and demand problem is more density, more multi-family, more accessory dwelling units, etc.

Within our changing world, there is an increasing need for public transit, yet access to transit is hindered by geographic, financial and other barriers. 🌐 In #UrbanPlanning, "Connectivity" refers to the directness and frequency of links in a street network. Dense street networks disperse traffic and shorten travel distances, making cities more walkable and less car-dependent, reducing pollution and improving public health.

"There are no cities or towns that are “too small” for good #public #transit. Any city or town with a significant population should have good, and reliable transit, for the benefits of their own citizens, and for the benefits of their #infrastructure bills. You cannot keep building more roads and more cars in this economy, but you can transform those roads to accommodate other modes of transportation, and that transformation can start tomorrow, so that future generations do not have to move to big cities, just to deserve reliable and convenient transit." A lot of conversations about #transportation that I have had a chance to be a part of only centered "big cities" and "big metropolitan areas" when it comes to transit improvement, but I believe the smaller #cities and #communities also deserve them too, for the benefits of their people and their finance, and this video here really resonated my thought! Having lived in a city of 300,000 population, I believe that it is possible!

How many minutes for cities? It seems that once again people are getting hung up on numbers rather than the bigger picture behind them. Should the city be a 15-minute, 20-minute, or anything-in-between city? The big question is how do we make cities livable and accessible that function for all - rich, poor, old, young, single persons, and those with families - and allow us to have quality time to use as we see fit. If in the past, city leaders have tried to make cities efficient for commuters (and cars), now is the time to consider and re-consider the diversity of lifestyles, daily activities, and questions of mobility.
