Communications Officer & the National Spokesperson for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Afghanistan
Hours after the floods that struck #Afghanistan earlier last month, #WFP started to respond to the needs of affected communities. Until end of last week, we have been able to reach more than 70,000 people in 14 provinces via our area offices with #food assistance. Nearly three quarters of these people were supported in #Ghor, #Baghlan and #Faryab which are also the provinces with some of the highest damages. This immediate assistance is crucial for these families, but what they really need is the support to #rebuild their lives. The affected villages need longer-term investments that protect homes and fields to prepare them to face the worsening #ClimateCrisis. In #Baghlan, a #WFP-supported protection wall protected 670 #families and 400 acres of agricultural #land.

Exerting rights and living with dignity are fundamental points to why managing displacement is importnat and must be a priorituninnthebyears ahead. Helping states to fulfill their responsibility towards citizens thus strengthening a renewed social contract, in the face of disasters and the adverse impacts of climate change, is IOM - UN Migration commitment. We count on all of layers of society to be part of this movement, United for a better future for all.
About 850 people affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, #Brazil🇧🇷 will be sheltered in the recently opened humanitarian reception centre. This is one of the many that IOM will run in partnership with Governo do Rio Grande do Sul, Fecomércio-RS and the Porto Alegre City Hall.

Former Chef de Cabinet WMO Senior Director (D2) United Nations | Views expressed here are entirely my own |
The impact of the recent floods in Kenya, UAE, Oman and China and so many parts of the world show signals of El Niño and attribution to human induced warming. Clearly significantly enhanced multihazard early-warning systems across the full cycle anticipatory action, adaptation/resilience measures and financing are all required asap. This should come in parallel with strong mitigation efforts on emissions to reach our NDC targets. Lives and livelihoods depend on this action.
Kenya is facing a worsening flood crisis due to the combined effects of El Niño and the ongoing March-May 2024 long rains. Since November 2023, El Niño triggered devastating floods and river overflows, causing more than a hundred deaths and widespread damage. As of 23 April 2024, these rains have already affected hundreds of thousands of people. Teams from the Kenya Red Cross have been fully mobilized to support those in need. Last November, the IFRC launched an emergency appeal to support the Kenya Red Cross response efforts. With the recent flooding, this appeal will help scale up their lifesaving response. The situation in flood-affected Kenya demands immediate humanitarian assistance. https://bit.ly/3xXEk1h
