Here’s what makes it extraordinary: Innovative Design A striking timber diagrid structure inspired by traditional Japanese techniques. Consolidates all programs into three interconnected buildings, preserving the historic Marvin Hall and renovating Chalmers Hall to infuse more daylight. Sustainable Materials Simple envelope of timber and glass, showcasing the building's efficient use of materials. Positioned to maximize natural light and air, insulated with natural materials like hemp wool for thermal comfort. Flexible Studio Environment Central hub organizing the space for efficiency and adaptability. Encourages collaboration and exploration among students and faculty. Living Curriculum Building serves as a tangible element for students to appreciate and critique, revealing its function, technology, and structure. As an architecture student who lives in Las Vegas, I believe it is essential to address the flawed teaching methods and design practices in architecture education in the United States. One of the major issues that needs attention is the excessive focus on parking design. This emphasis on parking design perpetuates a car-centric lifestyle and fails to prioritize pedestrian-oriented design principles. In contrast, European cities have long recognized the negative impact of excessive car usage and have successfully created more human-centered and aesthetically pleasing urban environments by minimizing the presence of cars. Our quality of life is directly influenced by the environment we live in. By designing spaces that prioritize pedestrians over vehicles, we can create more livable and sustainable communities. Instead of confining ourselves to our cars, we should aim to design cities that encourage walking and alternative modes of transportation. It is time to shift our architectural education towards a more holistic approach that considers the social, environmental, and cultural aspects of design. By challenging the traditional reliance on cars and advocating for pedestrian-oriented design principles, architects can play a significant role in shaping a better future for our cities. Let's rethink our approach to architecture education and strive for designs that enhance our lives, rather than confining us within our vehicles. Together, we can create more vibrant, people-friendly cities that prioritize sustainability and well-being.

In Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine, United States of America, Bowdoin College has completed a mass timber frame addition to their campus. The two new buildings, each have ample operable windows to allow views, natural sunlight, and fresh air for students and faculty. The buildings use of masstimber for the framework and brick for the facade, allowed the architects to lower the buildings embodied carbon footprint by 75% compared to more traditional building methods of steel and concrete. The buildings are the first commercial wood frame construction buildings in the state. The buildings further their sustainability initiatives by being entirely electric and utilizing a solar array on the campus for their energy usage. The designers also planted 80 trees across the site to compliment and enhance the existing surrounding forest.
