At Vision Construct, we had the privilege of speaking with Kartikeya Rajput, Associate Director at PRP, about the fascinating concept of net zero in construction. 🌍
Building a net zero building means that it is able to produce as much energy as it consumes, thanks to the efficient operations involved in its construction. As Kartik wisely put it, a building has a past, a present, and a future, and achieving net zero is crucial for a sustainable future.
During our conversation, Kartikeya highlighted the importance of understanding embodied carbon in the construction industry. In fact, the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) is currently working on a document that will provide a clear definition of embodied carbon and how it should be measured and addressed.
It's also worth noting that unregulated energy laws are not considered in operational energy calculations. This means that the construction industry needs to take into account the energy consumption and emissions associated with the operation of buildings, not just their initial construction. By addressing this gap and considering both embodied and operational carbon, we can truly work towards achieving net zero in construction.
