On this Patriot Day, BKV reflects on the profound resilience that emerged 23 years ago. Today, we honor the lives forever changed and those whose courage inspired a nation. Their legacy continues to remind us of the strength we can find in each other. #September11 #FirstResponders #USA

A very interesting conversation on AUKUS (as below ABC-Listen) highlighting major risk exposures between the lines. For example: 1. Risk of the USA not delivering the submarines in a reasonable time frame 2. Technology risk making submarines ineffective over the next decades, in that, they will be easy to monitor and track as well as use of unmanned subs 3. Our reliance on China's trade to pay for these subs where China can turn off the tab if threatened, and 4. Finally, a little country threatening one the world's leading super power could have serious consequences including loss of collaboration in advanced technologies with a country that has been leap frogging the world. AUKUS brings too many risks at a huge cost in a rapidly changing world. In my view, we stay near our shores and defend our country ferociously if anyone comes to attack us. We fight on our turf. Our country's resources and money need to be directed towards productive initiatives for economic development and nation's wealth creation business and trade activities. Our biggest threat is the risk of poor economy and our backwards slide in the Global Competitiveness as measured by the World Economic Forum. We should try our best to maintain great relations with all the key players and implement what John Howard did. It was indeed a great honour to work under his leadership to make a difference to Australia's economic growth and development.
Is Australia safer with AUKUS? UTS:ACRI Director James Laurenceson discusses on an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National Drive panel, alongside Sam Roggeveen, Director of the International Security Program at the Lowy Institute and the Hon R. Clarke Cooper, former US Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs, and former US Alternative Representative to the UN Security Council. Listen: https://bit.ly/3ZFoap6

OPINION: The SANDF at 30: Balancing political aspirations with budgetary realities As the SANDF approaches its 30th anniversary in April 2024, it is pertinent to reflect on its journey as a military institution over the past three decades. What are the prevailing issues affecting operational efficacy and its role as a policy tool of the government? Here, five key considerations are highlighted by Prof Theo Neethling of the Department of Political Studies and Governance of the University of the Free State. Read more: https://ufsweb.co/3uZnUUT

By highlighting how colonial powers employed a mix of incentives and threats to manipulate local elites, you demonstrate that the essence of smart power predates its modern conceptualization. Offering positions of power, economic benefits, and shares in the spoils of imperialism represents a soft power approach aimed at attracting and co-opting influential figures. Conversely, the implicit threat of punishment, such as military action or loss of privileges, in case of refusal, exemplifies the hard power component.

Happy to share my in-depth brief on Multi-Domain Operations for The Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research. In it, I attempt to explain some of the key characteristics common to MDO related concepts and highlight some of the issues that surround their implementation. No matter the problems with MDO, and there are many, the key drivers and elements inherent to MDO are not going away. Feedback on this piece is more than welcome.
“Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) is a term that, despite its ubiquity in the contemporary debate on warfare literature and increasing prevalence in doctrine, remains ambiguous and contested. In both military and academic communities of interest, the term elicits reactions ranging from uncertainty about what it is, to scepticism about whether it will ever be fully realised, to confusion between MDO as an exercise in technology versus a full-scale transformation in the military instrument of power.” – Ian Bowers, a senior research scientist at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies, unravels the mystery of Multi-Domain Operations.

Advice has diminishing returns. More isn’t better. But why? The first opinion you hear carries more weight than the fifteenth. This is due to something called anchoring bias. We tend to rely more on information we hear early vs late in the game. This is also why it can be favourable to kick off a negotiation with a number wildly in your favour. How can we curb the effect of anchoring when seeking advice? Accept it. You will be swayed early on, so be picky. Only ask for a few trusted opinions. Sooner or later you need to act. "If you survey enough people, all of the advice will cancel to zero." - Naval Ravikant
