#Reuse ♻ applies to more than just plastic. Last month, the Department of Energy added new categorical exemptions for environmental reviews under #NEPA. Constructing energy storage on previously developed land or rebuilding existing transmission lines are now categorically exempt from the NEPA review process. With a strong incentive to repurpose land, communities may start to see less development in local green spaces. Last week the White House announced the ambition to “upgrade 100,000 miles of transmission lines over the next five years.” The fact sheet announced Key Actions to facilitate “fast and cost-effective ways to unlock hundreds of gigawatts of additional clean energy, increase system reliability and resilience, reduce grid congestion and cut energy costs.” “The power sector can achieve this ambition primarily by deploying modern grid technologies like high-performance conductors and dynamic line ratings that enable existing transmission lines to carry more power.” Deploying Innovative Grid Technologies to update existing grids is the most cost-effective way of increasing capacity quickly, while also reducing the curtailment of renewable energy sources becoming available over the coming years. You can read the full fact sheet here, which lays out the ambitious Key Actions to Strengthen America’s Electric Grid, aiming to be a global standard bearer: https://lnkd.in/gP7-SNCu. We’re celebrating Clean Power Week 2024 with the American Clean Power Association (ACP) and our industry partners, and there’s much to be proud of. Between August 2022 and June 2024, the U.S. clean energy industry has announced $500 billion in new investments, and we are on track to hit 1 million clean energy jobs by 2030. We’re proud to be part of this massive boost to the American economy. Through the development, construction, and operation of our projects, we’re investing in workers and local communities from coast to coast while developing key infrastructure needed for a sustainable future for all. #PatternEnergy #CleanPowerWeek #PowerTheEconomy #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #CleanPower #RenewableEnergy #RenewablePower

"100% Clean Energy" is a noble goal, but it can mean vastly different things depending on how it's achieved. To add clarity, we're introducing Grid Impact Score - a quick and simple way to evaluate how much of an impact corporate clean energy strategies have on decarbonizing the grid! Grid Impact Score uses data from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to score companies based on the positive effect of their procurement methods on the grid mix. Couldn't agree more Kevin Doyle! Time and again, we've seen that a transparent regulatory structure lowers costs for consumers & spurs innovations. The private sector (with govt as a partner) should be empowered to advance affordable, reliable, & environmentally responsible energy solutions without excessive red tape. We clearly see the negative impacts of regulatory overreach and draconian energy policies in states like California & New York – where costs are skyrocketing, and risks of blackouts are increasing. Let’s all remember, energy is on the ballot this November! 🚨 #EnergyReliability #AffordableEnergy #Florida

From Rural Electric Magazine: On May 11, 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed a rule to eliminate carbon dioxide from the power sector by 2035. To reach that goal, it relies on fossil-fuel generation plants either shutting down completely or adopting clean hydrogen co-firing or carbon capture and storage (CCS), both technologies that have not been adequately demonstrated. EPA plans to finalize the rule in April. “We’d be shutting down the most efficient unit that we have,” Bowman says. “It would cause our rates to go up and our reliability to be decreased.” https://lnkd.in/gSrzRbn8

Peaker Plants: the unspoken challenge in the energy industry. There are over 1,000 fossil fuel Peaker Power plants throughout the US, largely inefficient and situated near lower-income communities, persist in emitting harmful pollutants. Despite a slight decrease in overall generating capacity, the average NOx emission rates from Peaker Plants surged by over 50%. The potential cost efficiency of technologies such as Zearas(TM) makes them economically viable and sustainable alternatives. By reducing reliance on Peaker Plants, Zearas(TM) also mitigates the disproportionate impact on low-income communities. Zearas(TM) is being designed to seamlessly integrate with renewable energy sources, storing excess energy generated during peak renewable production times. This integration ensures a steady and dependable energy supply, diminishing the current reliance on Peaker Plants to fill the energy demand gaps associated with renewable energy intermittency. While challenges persist, the data underscores that as cleaner and more reliable alternatives like Zearas(TM) become available, the imperative for Peaker Plants will be significantly curtailed, if not entirely eliminated. The key lies in providing financial support for the development of LDES technology, such as Zearas(TM), and subsequently implementing policies to expedite the transition away from Peaker Plants. Ultimately, putting a halt to the environmental hardships endured by vulnerable communities for decades. Keith Morlock Abound.Energy #ABOUND #Zearas #LDES #CleanEnergy #PeakerPlants

🌿 Today, Carbon Tracker is launching the 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' Report, shedding light on the UK Government's carbon capture (CCUS) Strategy. The report finds that the strategy, which aims to capture 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030 and is supported by £20 billion in taxpayer funding, is based on outdated and unrealistic estimates. Key Insights: ⚡ The report finds that the estimates are based on outdated assumptions, making the deployment of CCUS application cost more than double the current government estimates. 💷 Pursuing CCUS could lock consumers into a high-cost, fossil fuel dependent future, despite the availability of cleaner and more cost-effective alternatives. Conor Quinn, Eduardo Lopez and Madeleine Lynch have been securing impactful coverage of these findings. Read today's story in The Times: 👇 https://lnkd.in/dpfnWPQj

Q: Are you making money or saving the planet? A: Yes. Entrepreneur. Investor. Board Member. Fund Advisor. CEO three times, twice successfully. Cancer survivor.
In all the discussion of the potential enormous positive impacts from new rules, I see very little discussion of the potential for bio-coal as a drop-in zero C02 alternative. Why? “New clean power rules force utilities to take clean energy seriously” https://lnkd.in/gnUTh4du
